Why Emotions Shouldn't be Our Gods: A Christian Perspective

Why Emotions Make Terrible Gods

Have you ever felt like your emotions were completely out of control? Maybe you’ve been overwhelmed with anxiety, consumed with anger, or paralyzed by fear. Emotions are a natural part of being human, but they can also be incredibly powerful and overwhelming.

However, as Christians, we need to remember that emotions are not meant to be our gods. When we let our feelings dictate our actions and decisions, we can quickly find ourselves in trouble. So, why do emotions make terrible gods? Let’s explore.

Emotions are Unreliable

One of the biggest problems with making emotions our gods is that they are incredibly unreliable. Our feelings can change from moment to moment, and they can be influenced by a wide range of factors. For example, you might feel incredibly happy one minute and then be plunged into sadness the next.

As Christians, we need to base our lives on something more reliable than our emotions. We need to base our beliefs and actions on the unchanging truth of God’s Word. The Bible tells us that “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19).

Unlike our emotions, God’s Word is unchanging and always reliable. We can trust in the promises of Scripture, even when our feelings tell us otherwise.

Emotions Can Lead Us Astray

Another problem with making emotions our gods is that they can lead us astray. When we let our feelings control us, we can quickly become blinded to the truth of God’s Word. For example, if we are consumed with anger, we might lash out at someone in a way that is not in line with God’s will. Or, if we are overwhelmed with fear, we might make decisions based on that fear rather than on our faith in God.

As Christians, we need to be careful not to let our emotions lead us astray. We need to be grounded in the truth of God’s Word and guided by the Holy Spirit. The Bible tells us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

When we renew our minds with the truth of God’s Word, we can overcome the negative effects of our emotions and make decisions that are in line with God’s will.

Emotions are Not Meant to be Gods

Ultimately, the biggest problem with making emotions our gods is that they are not meant to be gods. As Christians, we believe that there is one true God, and He alone is worthy of our worship and devotion. When we let our emotions take the place of God in our lives, we are committing idolatry.

The Bible is clear that we are to worship God alone. Jesus said, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only” (Matthew 4:10). When we make emotions our gods, we are putting something else in the place of God, which is a sin.

As Christians, we need to be careful not to let our emotions become our gods. We need to keep our hearts and minds focused on God and His Word, and seek to live our lives in obedience to Him.

Conclusion

Emotions are a natural part of being human, but they are not meant to be our gods. When we let our feelings control us, we can quickly become overwhelmed and led astray. As Christians, we need to be grounded in the truth of God’s Word and guided by the Holy Spirit. We need to keep our hearts and minds focused on God, and seek to live our lives in obedience to Him.

Remember, emotions make terrible gods. Let’s keep our worship and devotion focused on the one true God who is always faithful and reliable.
