The Dehumanization of the Unborn: A Tragic Reality
Murder by Any Other Name: The Dehumanization of the Unborn
How can one group of people justify murdering another group and still sleep at night? The answer is simple: they can't. German soldiers didn't kill humans, Southern whites didn't lynch humans, and Planned Parenthood isn't killing humans either. Instead, they have bought into the insidious lie that the unborn are not fully human, and therefore, their destruction is not murder.
Dehumanization and Murder Throughout History
The idea of dehumanization has been used throughout history to justify atrocities against groups of people who are deemed less than fully human. In Nazi Germany, Jews, Roma, and others were considered "Untermenschen" or subhumans, and their extermination was seen as a necessary step in purifying the "master race." In America's history of slavery and segregation, African Americans were treated as less than human, making it easier for whites to justify their oppression and murder. Today, the unborn are the latest group to be stripped of their humanity in order to justify their murder.
Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the United States, has been at the forefront of the dehumanization of the unborn. In a 2015 video released by the Center for Medical Progress, Planned Parenthood officials were caught discussing the sale of fetal body parts, referring to the unborn as "specimens" and "products." This language is not accidental; it is a deliberate attempt to dehumanize the unborn and make their destruction more palatable.
But the dehumanization of the unborn goes beyond just language. The abortion industry has created a false narrative that the unborn are not fully human until they are born, or until they reach a certain level of development. This ignores the scientific fact that from the moment of conception, a new and unique human life is created, with its own DNA, its own heartbeat, and its own potential for growth and development.
The Biblical View of Human Life
As Christians, we must reject the dehumanization of the unborn and instead recognize that every human life, from conception to natural death, is sacred and valuable in God's eyes. The Bible is clear on this point:
- Genesis 1:27 - "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
- Psalm 139:13-16 - "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."
- Jeremiah 1:5 - "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."
These passages, and many others like them, affirm the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception. The unborn are not "products" or "specimens" to be discarded or sold for profit; they are human beings made in the image of God.
The Dangers of Dehumanization
Dehumanization is a dangerous tool that has been used throughout history to justify some of the worst atrocities committed by humans. When we strip a group of people of their humanity, we make it easier to justify their oppression, exploitation, and even murder. This is why we must be vigilant in our defense of the unborn and in our rejection of the dehumanization that has become so prevalent in our culture.
But we must also be careful not to dehumanize those who support abortion or work in the abortion industry. They too are made in the image of God, and we must approach them with love and compassion, seeking to show them the truth of the value of human life.
Conclusion
The dehumanization of the unborn is one of the greatest tragedies of our time. It has led to the deaths of millions of innocent human beings and has made it easier for our society to turn a blind eye to their destruction. But as Christians, we must stand firm in our belief that every human life is sacred and valuable, regardless of their stage of development or level of ability. We must reject the lies of the abortion industry and affirm the truth of the sanctity of human life.
