Worship in a Selfie World: A Call to True Worship

Worship in a Selfie World: A Call to True Worship

Do you remember the last time you worshiped God? Was it in a church service, a small group gathering, or maybe alone in your room? How did you feel? Did you feel the presence of God? Did you feel connected to him?

Worship is an essential part of our Christian faith. It is our way of expressing our love, gratitude, and adoration to God. The Bible teaches us that worship is not just an act, but a lifestyle. Romans 12:1 says, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."

However, in our modern world, worship has taken on a new form. With the rise of social media and the "selfie" culture, we have become more focused on ourselves than on God. We take pictures of ourselves in church, post them on social media, and use them as a way to show off our "spirituality." But is this really worship?

What is Worship?

Before we can talk about worship in a selfie world, we need to understand what worship is. Worship is not just singing songs or attending church services. Worship is a lifestyle that is lived out every day. It is our way of showing God that we love him, that we trust him, and that we are grateful for all that he has done for us.

Worship is also about giving God the honor and glory that he deserves. Revelation 4:11 says, "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." God is the creator of all things, and he deserves our worship and adoration.

The Selfie Culture

In recent years, social media has become a dominant force in our lives. We use it to connect with friends and family, share our experiences, and express our opinions. However, social media has also given rise to the "selfie" culture.

A selfie is a picture that you take of yourself, usually with a smartphone. Selfies have become a popular way to document our lives and share them with others. However, the problem with selfies is that they are all about us. They are a way to showcase ourselves, our accomplishments, and our experiences.

This "selfie" culture has also infiltrated our worship. We take pictures of ourselves in church, post them on social media, and use them as a way to show off our spirituality. We use worship as a way to showcase ourselves, rather than to give God the honor and glory that he deserves.

The Danger of Self-Worship

The problem with the "selfie" culture in worship is that it leads to self-worship. When we focus on ourselves in worship, we are not truly worshiping God. We are worshiping ourselves. We are using worship as a way to elevate ourselves, rather than to give God the honor and glory that he deserves.

Self-worship is dangerous because it leads to pride. When we become focused on ourselves, we begin to think that we are better than others. We begin to think that we are more spiritual, more talented, and more important than others. This leads to a sense of superiority that is not pleasing to God.

James 4:6 says, "But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'" God opposes the proud. He does not want us to be focused on ourselves. He wants us to be focused on him.

True Worship

True worship is about giving God the honor and glory that he deserves. It is about putting him first in our lives and living a life that is pleasing to him. True worship is about living a life that reflects the character of God.

Jesus said in John 4:23-24, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." True worship is not about the external acts of worship, but about the condition of our hearts.

True worship is also about serving others. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." When we serve others, we are serving God.

Conclusion

Worship is an essential part of our Christian faith. It is our way of expressing our love, gratitude, and adoration to God. However, in our modern world, worship has taken on a new form. With the rise of social media and the "selfie" culture, we have become more focused on ourselves than on God.

True worship is not about us. It is about God. It is about giving him the honor and glory that he deserves. It is about living a life that is pleasing to him and serving others. Let us put aside our "selfie" culture and focus on true worship.

As we close, let us reflect on Psalm 95:6-7, "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care."
