Why Imitating Godly Examples Matters: Learning, Encouragement, and Accountability

Why Imitating Godly Examples Matters

As believers, we all desire to grow in our faith and become more like Christ. But how do we know what that looks like? How can we be sure that we are on the right path?

The Bible gives us clear instructions and guidance on how to live a godly life. One of the ways we can learn and grow is by following the example of others who are further along in their walk with the Lord.

What the Bible Says About Following Examples

In Philippians 4:9, Paul encourages the believers to follow his example: "What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." Paul is not being arrogant or claiming perfection. He is simply acknowledging that his life is a model of godly living that others can learn from.

Similarly, in 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul says, "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ." Again, Paul is not saying that he is the ultimate example of Christlikeness. Rather, he is pointing to his own life as evidence of what it looks like to follow Christ.

Jesus himself also set an example for us to follow. In John 13:15, he says, "For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you." Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life, and we can learn from his words and actions how to live in a way that pleases God.

The Benefits of Following Examples

There are many benefits to following the example of godly men and women:

1. We learn from their experience.

Those who have been walking with the Lord for many years have a wealth of experience and wisdom that we can benefit from. By observing how they handle difficult situations, make decisions, and interact with others, we can learn valuable lessons that will help us in our own lives.

2. We are encouraged and motivated.

Seeing the example of someone who is living out their faith can be incredibly encouraging and motivating. It reminds us that living a godly life is possible and that we are not alone in our struggles.

3. We are held accountable.

When we have someone to look up to and follow, we are more likely to stay on track and remain accountable. We are less likely to stray from the path when we have a godly example to follow.

How to Choose a Godly Example

It's important to choose a godly example wisely. Here are some things to consider:

1. Look for someone who is further along in their faith.

Choose someone who has been walking with the Lord for many years and has a track record of living a godly life.

2. Look for someone who is humble.

Choose someone who is not afraid to admit their faults and weaknesses. A godly example should be someone who is able to acknowledge their mistakes and seek forgiveness.

3. Look for someone who is grounded in the Word.

Choose someone who has a deep understanding of the Bible and seeks to live out its principles in their daily life.

4. Look for someone who is actively involved in their church.

Choose someone who is committed to the local church and actively serving others. A godly example should be someone who is living out their faith in a practical way.

How to Follow a Godly Example

Once you have chosen a godly example, how do you go about following their lead? Here are some tips:

1. Observe their life.

Take note of how they live their life, how they interact with others, and how they handle difficult situations. What can you learn from their example?

2. Ask them for guidance.

If you have questions or are struggling with a particular issue, don't be afraid to ask for guidance. A godly example will be happy to offer advice and support.

3. Pray for them.

Pray for your godly example, that God will continue to guide and bless them as they seek to live out their faith.

4. Follow their lead.

As you learn from their example, apply what you have learned to your own life. Seek to imitate their faith and obedience to God.

Conclusion

Following the example of godly men and women is an important part of our growth as believers. By observing their lives, we can learn from their experience, be encouraged and motivated, and be held accountable. When choosing a godly example, look for someone who is further along in their faith, humble, grounded in the Word, and actively involved in their church. And once you have chosen a godly example, seek to follow their lead and imitate their faith and obedience to God.
