Trusting in the Holy Spirit: God's Promise to Give You Something to Say
God Will Give You Something to Say
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were called upon to defend your faith, but you didn't know what to say? Maybe you were in a heated debate with an unbelieving friend, or perhaps you were asked to give a testimony in front of a group of people. In moments like these, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do or say. But the good news is that as a Christian, you don't have to rely on your own wisdom or strength to defend your faith. God promises to give you something to say.
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
Jesus made a powerful promise to his disciples in Luke 12:11-12 when he said, "When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say." In other words, when you find yourself in a situation where you need to defend your faith, you can trust that the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say.
This promise is not just for the disciples who lived during Jesus' time on earth. It is a promise for all Christians, including you and me. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, and he is the one who empowers us to live the Christian life. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we are given a new nature that is able to please God and live a life that is pleasing to him. But the Holy Spirit doesn't just empower us to live the Christian life; he also gives us the words to say when we need them.
Jesus reiterated this promise in Mark 13:11 when he said, "When they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit." Again, we see that we don't have to rely on our own wisdom or strength to defend our faith. The Holy Spirit will give us the words to say.
The Role of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives
Before we dive deeper into this promise, let's take a look at the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit is not just a force or an energy; he is a person. He is God, just like the Father and the Son. As a person, the Holy Spirit has a will, emotions, and intellect. He is not some impersonal force that we can manipulate or control.
So what does the Holy Spirit do in our lives? First and foremost, he brings us into a relationship with God. When we repent of our sins and place our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. He seals us for the day of redemption, which means that we are secure in our salvation. He also empowers us to live the Christian life. He gives us the ability to obey God and resist sin. He produces fruit in our lives, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
But the Holy Spirit does more than just empower us to live the Christian life. He also gives us spiritual gifts that we can use to serve God and build up the church. These gifts include things like prophecy, healing, tongues, interpretation of tongues, teaching, administration, and many others (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). When we use these gifts, we are able to minister to others in a powerful way, and we are able to bring glory to God.
The Holy Spirit and Evangelism
One of the primary ways that the Holy Spirit works in our lives is through evangelism. When we share the gospel with others, we are doing the work of evangelism, but it is the Holy Spirit who is doing the persuading. In John 16:8-11, Jesus said, "And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged."
In other words, it is the Holy Spirit who convicts people of their sin and their need for a savior. We can share the gospel with others, but it is the Holy Spirit who does the work of salvation. This is why it is so important to rely on the Holy Spirit when we are evangelizing. We can't convince someone to become a Christian through our own strength or persuasive arguments. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that someone can be saved.
Trusting in the Holy Spirit
So how do we trust in the Holy Spirit when we are defending our faith or sharing the gospel? First, we need to recognize that we are not on our own. We have the Holy Spirit living within us, and he is able to give us the words to say. Second, we need to pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance and wisdom. We can't rely on our own understanding; we need to rely on the Holy Spirit's understanding. Third, we need to be willing to step out in faith and trust that the Holy Spirit will give us the words to say. We can't wait for the perfect moment or the perfect words. We need to be willing to speak up and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide us.
One of the best examples of someone who trusted in the Holy Spirit is the apostle Paul. In 1 Corinthians 2:1-5, he wrote, "And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God."
Paul recognized that he couldn't rely on his own wisdom or strength to persuade people to become Christians. He needed to rely on the Holy Spirit's power. And when he did, he saw amazing things happen. He saw people come to faith in Jesus, and he saw churches planted all over the world. Paul's example should encourage us to trust in the Holy Spirit as well.
In Conclusion
As Christians, we don't have to rely on our own wisdom or strength to defend our faith or share the gospel. God has promised to give us something to say through the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to trust in the Holy Spirit's guidance and wisdom, pray for his guidance, and be willing to step out in faith. When we do, we will see amazing things happen. We will see people come to faith in Jesus, and we will see the church grow and flourish. So let's trust in the Holy Spirit today and every day.
