The High Calling of Motherhood: Embracing God's Design for Nurturing Children

Why Does God Ask So Much of Moms?

As women, we often find ourselves asking what our purpose is and what we should be doing. These questions can haunt us at any age, even when we have a house full of hungry children. It's natural to wonder if there is something more, something else we should be doing.

But let's think about it from the perspective of our children. They rely on us for everything - to feed them, hold them, teach them, and love them. To them, the answer is simple: "You are here for us!" And they're right. Our primary role as mothers is to care for and nurture our children.

I remember asking these questions when my own children were young. I knew the answer deep down - God had entrusted me with the important task of raising my children. This was the work He had specifically designed for me. So, I threw myself into it wholeheartedly, dedicating myself to feeding, holding, teaching, and loving my little ones.

Now, my children have grown and have their own families. But the questions still linger, and I still hold onto the answer. While my physical nest may be empty, my spiritual nest is full of purpose. God has given me new duties, new opportunities to serve Him.

God's Design for Motherhood

When we look at the Bible, we see that motherhood is a role that God values and celebrates. In Proverbs 31:28, it says, "Her children rise up and call her blessed." This verse highlights the impact that a mother has on her children's lives.

God has entrusted mothers with the incredible responsibility of shaping the next generation. We have the privilege of pouring love, wisdom, and guidance into our children's lives. Psalm 127:3 tells us that "children are a heritage from the Lord." Our role as mothers is not just about raising children, but about stewarding the precious gift that God has given us.

Just as a bird tends to its nest and feeds its young, we are called to nurture and care for our children. And just like a bird, we have unique gifts and abilities that enable us to fulfill this role. God has specifically designed us for motherhood, equipping us with everything we need to be the mothers our children need.

Embracing Our Calling

While motherhood is a high calling, it can also be demanding and challenging. There may be moments when we feel overwhelmed or inadequate. But in those moments, we can find comfort in knowing that God has not left us to navigate this journey alone.

God promises to be with us every step of the way, providing the strength, wisdom, and grace we need. In Isaiah 40:11, it says, "He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart." We can trust that God will carry us through the ups and downs of motherhood, just as a shepherd carries his lambs.

It's important to remember that our worth as mothers is not defined by how well we juggle all our responsibilities or how society perceives us. Our worth is found in our identity as children of God. We are valuable and loved simply because we belong to Him.

Finding Balance

While our primary focus is on our children, it's also important to find a balance in our lives. God has given us unique talents and passions that can be used to serve Him and others. It's okay to pursue other interests and to take care of ourselves.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 22:37-39, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" As mothers, we are called to love God, love our children, and love ourselves.

By taking care of ourselves and pursuing our own interests, we become better mothers. We have more to give to our children when we are fulfilled and nourished ourselves. So, let go of any guilt or self-doubt and embrace the balance that God has designed for us.

The Gift of Motherhood

Motherhood is a gift from God. It is a role that allows us to experience a love and joy like no other. It may be demanding and challenging at times, but it is also incredibly rewarding.

When we embrace our calling as mothers and surrender ourselves to God's plan, we find purpose and fulfillment. We have the privilege of witnessing our children grow and thrive, knowing that we played a vital role in their lives.

So, the next time you find yourself questioning your purpose as a mother, remember that God has entrusted you with an important task. Embrace your calling, knowing that you are making a lasting impact on the lives of your children. Trust in God's guidance and rely on His strength. And above all, cherish the gift of motherhood.
