Trusting God's Promises: Living in His Will Without Knowing

You Don't Have to Know God's Will - Desiring God

You Don't Have to Know God's Will

Trusting God's Promises and Resting in His Sovereignty

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you desperately needed to know God's will, but felt lost and uncertain? Perhaps you've had questions about important life decisions, relationships, or career choices. It's natural to desire clarity and direction in these moments, but what if I told you that you don't have to know God's will in order to live a fulfilling and purposeful life?

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that knowing God's will means receiving specific instructions or guidance for every decision we make. However, the Bible teaches us that living in the will of God is more about knowing and trusting His specific promises rather than seeking specific direction.

Hebrews 11:8 reminds us of the faith of Abraham, who obeyed and followed God without knowing where he was going. Abraham trusted in God's promises, even though he couldn't see the full picture. Similarly, we are called to trust in God's promises and rest in His sovereignty, even when we don't have all the answers.

Transferring Confidence to God's Word

When we face uncertainties and dilemmas, our natural inclination is to rely on our own understanding and seek for clear direction. However, Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. In other words, instead of relying on our limited wisdom, we should transfer our confidence to God's Word and trust that His promises will guide us.

God's Word is filled with promises and principles that are relevant to every aspect of our lives. For example, when it comes to making decisions, we can trust in the promise of James 1:5, which says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." This promise assures us that God will provide wisdom and guidance when we seek Him.

Furthermore, Romans 8:28 reminds us that "all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." This promise reassures us that even when we don't understand the why or how, God is working everything out for our ultimate good.

Resting in God's Sovereignty

Resting in God's sovereignty means recognizing that He is in control of all things and that His plans are ultimately for our good. Psalm 131:1-2 beautifully portrays this trust and surrender to God's sovereignty:

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;

my eyes are not raised too high;

I do not occupy myself with things

too great and too marvelous for me.

But I have calmed and quieted my soul,

like a weaned child with its mother;

like a weaned child is my soul within me.

Psalm 131:1-2

Just as a weaned child finds peace and contentment in the presence of its mother, we can find rest and peace in the presence of our Heavenly Father. When we surrender our need for control and trust in God's sovereignty, we can experience a calm and quiet soul, even in the midst of uncertainty.

Remember, God's ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). We may not always understand His plans, but we can trust that His plans are perfect and that He is working everything out according to His purpose.

Living in God's Will Today

Living in God's will is not just a future hope or a distant dream. It is a present reality that we can embrace today. Instead of constantly striving to figure out every detail of our lives, we can focus on cultivating a deep relationship with God and aligning our lives with His Word.

When we prioritize spending time in prayer, studying the Bible, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we position ourselves to hear from God and discern His will. It is through this ongoing relationship with God that we can gain wisdom, grow in faith, and make decisions that align with His purposes.

While there will still be moments of ambiguity and uncertainty, we can trust that God's promises and His sovereignty are enough to guide us. We can find peace in knowing that we don't have to have all the answers, but rather, we can rest in the assurance that God is with us every step of the way.

Conclusion

As we navigate through the uncertainties of life, let us remember that living in God's will is not about having all the answers or receiving specific direction for every decision we make. It is about knowing and trusting in God's promises, resting in His sovereignty, and cultivating a deep relationship with Him.

So, the next time you find yourself in a position of needing to know God's will, remember that you can transfer your confidence from your own understanding to God's Word. Seek His wisdom, trust in His promises, and rest in His sovereignty. Live in the present reality of God's will and experience the peace and purpose that comes from walking with Him.
