True Christianity: A Fight Against Sin and the Devil
True Christianity is a Fight
As a Christian, have you ever felt like giving up? Have you ever thought that the Christian life is too hard, or that you are not strong enough to follow Jesus? If you have, you are not alone. The Christian life is not an easy one, and it is not meant to be. True Christianity is a fight.
The Bible Says So
The idea of Christianity as a fight is not something that we have invented. It is a theme that runs throughout the Bible. In the Old Testament, we see God's people engaged in battles against their enemies. In the New Testament, we see the apostles urging Christians to fight against sin and the devil.
For example, in 1 Timothy 6:12, the apostle Paul writes to Timothy, "Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses." Paul is urging Timothy to fight the good fight of faith. In other words, he is telling him that the Christian life is not a walk in the park. It is a battle that requires effort, perseverance, and determination.
The Christian Life is a Battle
As Christians, we are engaged in a spiritual battle. The Bible says that we are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). Satan and his demons are real, and they are working hard to tempt us, discourage us, and lead us away from God. The Christian life is not a battle against people, but against sin and evil.
But the battle is not just external. The Christian life is also a battle within ourselves. The Bible says that our hearts are deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). We have a sinful nature that is constantly at war with the Spirit of God within us (Galatians 5:17). We are constantly tempted to sin, to give in to our fleshly desires, and to take the easy way out.
So, what can we do? How can we fight this battle?
How to Fight
First, we need to understand that we cannot fight this battle on our own. We need God's help. The Bible says that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). We need to rely on God's power, not our own, to fight this battle.
Second, we need to put on the armor of God. In Ephesians 6:13-18, Paul describes the armor of God that we need to put on to fight this battle. This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. We need to be equipped with these spiritual weapons to fight against the devil and his schemes.
Third, we need to be in community with other believers. The Christian life is not meant to be lived alone. We need the support and encouragement of other believers to help us in this battle. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."
The Ultimate Victory
As Christians, we fight from a position of victory. Jesus has already won the ultimate victory over sin, death, and the devil. The Bible says that we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37). We fight knowing that we have already won the war through Jesus Christ.
But even though we have won the war, we still need to fight the battles. We still need to resist the devil, to put to death the deeds of the flesh, and to walk in the Spirit. The Christian life is a fight, but it is a fight that we can win through the power of God.
Conclusion
In conclusion, true Christianity is a fight. It is a battle against sin, evil, and the devil. But we do not fight this battle alone. We have the power of God, the armor of God, and the support of other believers to help us in this fight. We fight from a position of victory, knowing that Jesus has already won the ultimate victory. So, let us fight the good fight of faith, knowing that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
