Trading Self-Worth for Awe and Wonder: Finding Your Worth in God
Trading Self-Worth for Awe and Wonder
As women, we often struggle with self-worth. We feel that we are not enough or that we do not measure up to the expectations of others. We believe that we are flawed, unworthy, and unlovable. These beliefs lead us to seek validation and approval from others, and we end up trading our self-worth for their opinions.
It is easy to fall into this trap because we live in a culture that values achievement, success, and external appearance. We are bombarded with messages that tell us that we need to be more, do more, and have more in order to be happy and fulfilled. We are told that we need to look a certain way, act a certain way, and think a certain way in order to be accepted and valued.
But this is a lie. Our worth is not based on what we do, what we have, or what others think of us. Our worth is based on who we are in Christ. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, created in the image of God, and loved with an everlasting love.
The Search for Self-Worth
So why do we struggle with self-worth? Why do we feel that we are not enough?
One reason is that we compare ourselves to others. We look at their achievements, their possessions, and their relationships, and we feel that we fall short. We believe that if we had what they have or did what they do, we would be happier and more fulfilled.
Another reason is that we have bought into the lie that our worth is based on our performance. We believe that if we do well in school, in our career, or in our relationships, we will be valued and accepted. We believe that our worth is tied to our accomplishments and that we need to prove ourselves in order to be worthy.
But the problem with this way of thinking is that it is based on the world's standards, not God's. The world tells us that we need to earn our worth, but God tells us that our worth is a gift. The world tells us that we need to achieve in order to be accepted, but God tells us that we are accepted in Christ. The world tells us that we need to look a certain way, act a certain way, and think a certain way in order to be valued, but God tells us that we are valued simply because we are His.
The Source of Self-Worth
So where do we find our self-worth? How do we break free from the cycle of comparison and performance?
The answer is to turn our focus from ourselves to God. We need to see ourselves as He sees us and to understand our worth in light of His love and grace.
One way to do this is to meditate on the truth of God's Word. The Bible is full of verses that remind us of our worth and identity in Christ. For example, Psalm 139:14 says, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." And 1 Peter 2:9 says, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
When we meditate on these verses and allow them to sink into our hearts, we begin to see ourselves as God sees us. We begin to understand that we are valuable, loved, and accepted simply because we belong to Him.
The Power of Awe and Wonder
Another way to find our self-worth is to focus on the awe and wonder of God. When we are in awe of God, we are reminded of His greatness, His power, and His love for us. We are reminded that He is the Creator of the universe, the Sustainer of all things, and the Redeemer of our souls. We are reminded that He is our Father, our Friend, and our Savior.
When we focus on the awe and wonder of God, we begin to see ourselves in a new light. We realize that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves and that our worth is not based on our own achievements or abilities. We realize that we are loved and valued simply because we are a part of God's plan.
One way to cultivate awe and wonder is to spend time in nature. When we look at the beauty and complexity of the natural world, we are reminded of God's power and creativity. We are reminded that He is the one who sustains all things and that He cares for us in the same way He cares for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field.
Another way to cultivate awe and wonder is to spend time in worship. When we sing praises to God, we are reminded of His greatness and His love for us. We are reminded that He is worthy of all our praise and that we are blessed to be a part of His family.
The Freedom of Self-Worth
When we find our self-worth in God, we are set free from the need for validation and approval from others. We no longer have to trade our self-worth for their opinions because we know that our worth is secure in Christ.
We are also set free from the cycle of comparison and performance. We no longer have to measure ourselves against others or strive to prove our worth. We know that our worth is not based on what we do, but on who we are in Christ.
And we are set free to live the abundant life that Jesus promises. We are free to love others, serve others, and make a difference in the world because we know that our worth is not based on our own achievements, but on what Christ has done for us.
The Challenge of Self-Worth
So let us challenge ourselves to find our self-worth in God. Let us meditate on His Word, cultivate awe and wonder, and live in the freedom of His love and grace. Let us reject the lie that our worth is based on what we do, what we have, or what others think of us. Let us embrace the truth that our worth is based on who we are in Christ.
And let us encourage others to do the same. Let us be a community of women who find their self-worth in God and who encourage one another to do the same. Let us celebrate each other's strengths, support each other's weaknesses, and remind each other of the truth of God's Word.
For when we find our self-worth in God, we are truly free to be who He has called us to be.
