The Importance of Education for Girls: Empowering Women to Know, Love, and Serve God

On April 14, 2014, a horrifying event took place in Nigeria. A terrorist group known as Boko Haram kidnapped over 270 girls from the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School. These girls, aged between sixteen and eighteen, were taken against their will and subjected to unimaginable suffering. The leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, stated that the group believes it is sinful for girls to receive a formal education and that they should instead focus on getting married at a young age.

In the face of such a horrific act, it is important for us as Christians to understand why we promote and encourage education for girls and young women. Education is not only a means of acquiring knowledge and skills, but it is also a way for individuals to fulfill their God-given potential and to glorify Him in everything they do.

1. God created men and women in His image, and both have the capacity to know and love Him.

In the book of Genesis, it is stated that God created man in His own image, both male and female. This means that men and women are equal in their ability to know and love God. Both have the capacity to understand and appreciate the world God has created, and both are called to be fruitful and multiply, filling the earth and subduing it.

Education plays a crucial role in enabling men and women to maximize their God-given capacities. By learning about the world and acquiring knowledge and skills, individuals can better understand and appreciate the wonders of God's creation. Education helps us to fulfill our calling to be good stewards of the earth and to use our abilities for the glory of God.

2. God has revealed His glory in the natural world and calls us to see and praise His wonders.

The Bible tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God and that the earth is full of His wonders. By studying the natural world, we can gain a deeper understanding of God's power and creativity. Education helps us to develop the habit of observing and appreciating the beauty and complexity of the world around us.

When girls and young women are denied an education, they are deprived of the opportunity to witness and praise God's wonders. By promoting education for all, we enable individuals to develop a deeper appreciation for the handiwork of God and to give Him the praise He deserves.

3. God has revealed Himself through His word, and education helps us to know and love Him more fully.

While the natural world reveals some aspects of God's character and power, it is through His word that He has fully revealed Himself to us. The Bible is the most important book in the world because it contains God's revelation of what we need to know for salvation and fruitful living.

Education plays a crucial role in enabling individuals to read and understand the Bible. By developing the habit and skill of reading, individuals can deepen their knowledge and love for God. Women, in particular, should not be limited in their access to the word of God. They are called to know and love God as fully as they can, just like men.

4. Education cultivates the habits of mind needed for all the roles God leads women into.

Whether a woman is a homemaker, a career woman, or a partner with her husband in breadwinning, education equips her with the habits of mind necessary for success in any role. These habits include observing accurately, understanding clearly, evaluating truthfully, feeling appropriately, applying wisdom, and expressing oneself effectively.

Education is not limited to academic knowledge or career skills. It encompasses a holistic development of the mind and character. By cultivating these habits of mind, women can fulfill their calling to be mature and fruitful disciples of Christ.

In conclusion, education is a fundamental right that should be accessible to all, regardless of gender. It is not only a means of acquiring knowledge and skills but also a way for individuals to fulfill their God-given potential and to glorify Him in everything they do. By promoting education for girls and young women, we enable them to know and love God more fully, to appreciate His creation, and to develop the habits of mind needed for success in any role. Let us continue to advocate for education for all and pray for the safe return of the girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram.
