The Impact of Billy Graham: God's Work Through a Surrendered Life

God Did the Work, Period

As I sit here in Minneapolis, reflecting on the passing of Billy Graham, I am overwhelmed with memories and emotions. Growing up in Greenville, South Carolina, in the late 1950s, Billy Graham was like a sun in the solar system of my religious world. The fear of his death was real to me as a young boy, not fully trusting in God's sovereignty.

Now, at 72 years old, I look back and realize the impact Billy Graham had on my life and the lives of countless others. Today, as we mourn his loss, I want to take a moment to reflect on the work that God did through this remarkable man.

A Life Surrendered

Billy Graham's life was marked by a deep surrender to God. He understood that it was not about his own abilities or accomplishments, but about the power of God working through him. He lived out the words of the hymn, "I Surrender All," as he dedicated his life to proclaiming the Gospel to the world.

Throughout his ministry, Billy Graham remained humble, recognizing that it was God who was at work. He often quoted the words of John the Baptist, saying, "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30, ESV). Billy Graham understood that his role was simply to point people to Jesus, the one who could truly save and transform their lives.

The Power of the Gospel

One of the key reasons for Billy Graham's impact was his unwavering belief in the power of the Gospel. He preached a simple message - that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone. This message resonated with people from all walks of life, from the poorest to the richest, from the young to the old.

The Apostle Paul said, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16, ESV). Billy Graham understood this truth and boldly proclaimed it throughout his ministry. He knew that the Gospel had the power to change lives and bring hope to a broken world.

A Call to Repentance

Billy Graham's message was not just about the power of the Gospel, but also about the need for repentance. He called people to turn away from their sins and turn to God in faith. He understood that true transformation could only come through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Jesus himself said, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 4:17, ESV). Billy Graham echoed these words, urging people to recognize their need for a Savior and to surrender their lives to Christ.

An Invitation to Come

One of the most memorable aspects of Billy Graham's ministry was his invitation for people to come forward and make a public commitment to Christ. Whether it was in a stadium filled with thousands or in a small church, Billy Graham extended the invitation for people to respond to the Gospel.

Jesus said, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28, ESV). Billy Graham understood the importance of responding to Jesus' invitation and he gave people the opportunity to do so.

A Legacy that Lives On

Although Billy Graham may no longer be with us, his legacy continues to impact the world. His faithful proclamation of the Gospel has inspired many to follow in his footsteps and continue sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

As we remember Billy Graham, let us be encouraged to live lives of surrender, boldly proclaiming the Gospel, and extending the invitation for others to come to Christ. Let us remember that it is God who does the work, and we are simply vessels in His hands.

Reflect and Respond

Take a moment to reflect on the impact that Billy Graham had on your own life. How has his ministry influenced your faith? How can you continue his legacy of surrender and proclamation of the Gospel?

Let us also remember to pray for the next generation of leaders, that God would raise up men and women who will boldly proclaim the Gospel and continue the work that Billy Graham started.

  • Pray for boldness and clarity in sharing the Gospel.

  • Pray for hearts to be open and receptive to the message of salvation.

  • Pray for a revival in our churches and a renewed passion for reaching the lost.

May we be inspired by the life and ministry of Billy Graham, and may we continue to trust in God's work as we seek to make Him known to the world.
