Watch Where You Walk in 2023

The Christian life is not a sprint. It is a journey of ten million steps.

Day after day, and year after year, we put one foot in front of the other as we flee the wreckage of our sin and follow Jesus on the path of life. We step away from self-protection toward love, away from darkness toward light, away from foolishness toward wisdom. Step after step after step — ten million times.

“The Christian life is not a sprint. It is a journey of ten million steps.”

But unless we stop every so often, and take a careful look backward and forward, our feet will gradually drift from God’s paths and stumble onto others. Like a hiker who never checks his compass, we’ll set out in the right direction and end up miles off the mark. Slowly, subtly, and perhaps imperceptibly, we veer from the narrow road that leads to life.

Walking with Intentionality

As we walk this journey of faith in 2023 and beyond, it is essential that we watch where we walk. We cannot afford to be careless or complacent. We need to be intentional about the path we take and the steps we make.

Consider the words of the psalmist in Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." God's Word serves as our guide, illuminating the way before us and preventing us from stumbling into darkness. It is the compass that keeps us on track and ensures we stay on the narrow road.

So, how do we watch where we walk? Let's explore some practical steps:

1. Study and Meditate on God's Word

In order to walk in the right path, we must know the path. The Bible is not just a book; it is the living and active Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). By studying and meditating on God's Word, we gain insight, wisdom, and discernment to navigate the complexities of life. We learn what pleases God and what leads us away from Him.

As we read and reflect on Scripture, we discover the character of God and His plan for our lives. We find comfort in His promises and guidance in His commands. The more we immerse ourselves in His Word, the more we align our steps with His will.

2. Cultivate a Vibrant Prayer Life

Walking with God involves a two-way conversation. Prayer is our means of communing with Him, pouring out our hearts, and seeking His guidance. It is through prayer that we align our desires with His and invite Him to lead us on the right path.

When we pray, we acknowledge our dependence on God and submit our plans to His sovereign will. We seek His wisdom and strength to walk in obedience. Prayer is not just a religious duty; it is a heartfelt conversation with our Heavenly Father, who longs to guide us and draw us closer to Him.

3. Surround Yourself with Fellow Believers

We were not meant to walk this journey alone. God has designed us for community, to encourage and sharpen one another in our pursuit of Him. Surrounding ourselves with fellow believers provides accountability, support, and opportunities for growth.

Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us, "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." When we gather with fellow believers, we find strength, guidance, and encouragement to keep walking in faith.

4. Guard Your Heart and Mind

The world we live in is filled with distractions and temptations that can lead us astray. To watch where we walk, we must be diligent in guarding our hearts and minds. Proverbs 4:23 advises us, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

This means being intentional about the influences we allow in our lives. It means being discerning about the media we consume, the friendships we cultivate, and the thoughts we entertain. By aligning our hearts and minds with the truth of God's Word, we protect ourselves from being swayed by the world.

Conclusion

As we embark on the journey of 2023 and beyond, let us watch where we walk. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Let us seek His guidance, follow His footsteps, and stay on the path that leads to life.

Remember, the Christian life is not a sprint, but a journey of ten million steps. Every step matters, and every decision we make along the way shapes our walk with God. So, let us walk with intentionality, guided by the lamp of God's Word, fueled by prayer, supported by fellow believers, and guarded in our hearts and minds.

May the Lord grant us the wisdom and strength to watch where we walk and to stay faithful to Him as we journey through 2023 and beyond.
