The Five Marks of a Servant Leader



Every Christian leader must strive to be a servant leader. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, set the perfect example of a servant leader. He taught us that the greatest among us should become the youngest, and the leader should serve others.



However, being a servant leader can be challenging, especially when it comes to knowing how to lead effectively. Servant leadership is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It requires wisdom, discernment, and a deep understanding of the Bible.



In this article, we will explore the five marks of a servant leader. These marks are not exhaustive, but they will give you a good foundation for leading like Christ.



1. Humility



Humility is the foundation of servant leadership. A humble leader recognizes that they are not perfect and that they need the help of others. They do not seek to exalt themselves, but instead, they seek to serve others and lift them up.



The Bible teaches us that humility is a key characteristic of a Christian leader. In Philippians 2:3-4, Paul writes:




Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.




Jesus Himself set the example of humility when He washed His disciples' feet (John 13:1-17). He demonstrated that even the greatest should be willing to serve others.



As a servant leader, you should strive to cultivate humility in your life. This means recognizing your weaknesses, admitting your mistakes, and being willing to learn from others.



2. Love



Love is the foundation of Christian leadership. As a servant leader, you should love those you lead and serve. This love should be selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional.



Jesus taught us that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:29-31). This means that we should love others as we love ourselves.



As a servant leader, you should strive to love those you lead. This means putting their needs before your own, serving them sacrificially, and showing them Christ's love in all that you do.



3. Integrity



Integrity is the foundation of trust in leadership. A leader who lacks integrity will have a hard time gaining the trust of those they lead.



As a servant leader, you should strive to be a person of integrity. This means being honest, trustworthy, and transparent in all that you do.



The Bible teaches us that integrity is a key characteristic of a Christian leader. In 2 Corinthians 8:21, Paul writes:




For we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord's sight but also in the sight of man.




As a servant leader, you should aim to be a person of integrity not only in the sight of God but also in the sight of those you lead.



4. Vision



A servant leader should have a clear vision for the future. This vision should be grounded in the Bible and should be aligned with the mission of the church or organization.



As a servant leader, you should be able to communicate your vision clearly to those you lead. This means casting a compelling vision that inspires and motivates others to work towards a common goal.



The Bible teaches us that vision is important for leadership. In Proverbs 29:18, it says:




Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.




A servant leader should have a prophetic vision that guides their leadership and inspires others to follow.



5. Empowerment



A servant leader should empower those they lead to reach their full potential. This means equipping them with the tools and resources they need to succeed and giving them the freedom to make decisions and take risks.



As a servant leader, you should be a coach and mentor to those you lead. This means investing in their development, providing feedback and guidance, and creating a culture of learning and growth.



The Bible teaches us that empowerment is important for leadership. In Ephesians 4:11-12, it says:




And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.




A servant leader should equip those they lead for the work of ministry and empower them to make an impact for Christ.
