The Eternal Renewal: God's Love and Mercies Are New Every Morning

Have you ever stopped to ponder the words of the prophet Jeremiah in his book of Lamentations? These words have brought comfort to many of us during our darkest days:

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22–23)

But have you ever wondered how God's love and mercies can be both unceasing and new every morning? How can something that never ends also be constantly renewed?

Every Single Moment Is New

At first glance, it may seem like Jeremiah is simply being poetic when he says that God's love and mercies are new every morning. However, I believe there is a deeper truth to his words. Every single moment is new, and in each moment, God's love and mercies are fresh and vibrant.

Think about it. Every moment is a unique creation by God, brought into existence by the Father through the Son. In Hebrews 1:2–3, we learn that Jesus upholds the universe by the word of his power. Each moment is a new, powerful, and intricate word spoken by the Word himself. God does not neglect a single moment, nor does he repeat any. Each moment is intentionally created and filled with God's faithfulness.

"Old" Is the Real Illusion

We often perceive things as new or old based on our experience of time and mortality. As mortal beings, we observe creation and life progressing towards death, and we label things as aging. However, this is a limited perspective. In reality, every thing is new in every moment.

God is not defined by age. He is the Ancient of Days, a term used to help us grasp the vastness of his eternal nature. Time itself is a creation of God, and he is not bound by it. Similarly, we are not defined by our age. While we may perceive ourselves as young or old based on our experience of time, in reality, we exist in each brand new moment. Each momentary experience is new, and everything we do is new. We are constantly experiencing and doing something that has never been done before and will never be done again. We always exist in the new and always do what's new.

"Behold, I Am Making All Things New"

In the age to come, I believe we will no longer speak of things being old. All things will always be new because we will have a greater awareness and wonder of God's continual creation without the constraints of time and impending death. The promise in Revelation 21:5, "Behold, I am making all things new," holds a world of wonderful mystery. Likewise, when 2 Corinthians 5:17 states that the old has passed away, there is more packed into that statement than we can imagine.

God's steadfast love and mercies for us are indeed new every morning, and even more so, new with every moment. He continually renews his commitment to us, faithfully working for our good. So, let us fully embrace and appreciate the gift of each new moment, knowing that the one who is "making all things new" is diligently working for our eternal, ageless good (Romans 8:28).

In conclusion, Jeremiah's words remind us that God's love and mercies are unceasing and continually renewed. Every moment is a new creation by God, and in each moment, we experience the freshness of his love and mercies. Our perception of things as old is an illusion created by our mortality. In reality, everything is new every moment. As we look forward to the age to come, we can anticipate a world where everything is constantly renewed, free from the constraints of time and death. So, let us cherish each new moment and trust in the faithfulness of our God who is always making all things new.
