Living a Worthy Life: Assessing the Worthiness of Our Lives Before God
Is My Life Worthy of the King?
When we consider the worthiness of our lives before God, it can be both humbling and challenging. As followers of Christ, we desire to live in a manner that pleases Him and reflects His glory. So, how do we know if our lives are worthy of the King?
Walking Worthy of the Lord
Throughout the New Testament, we find passages that call us to "walk worthy" of our calling as believers. Ephesians 4:1, Philippians 1:27, Colossians 1:10, 1 Thessalonians 2:12, 1 Thessalonians 4:1, 2 Thessalonians 1:5 and 2 Thessalonians 1:11 are just a few examples of these admonitions.
But what does it mean to walk worthy of the Lord? How can we assess the worthiness of our lives? Thankfully, the Scriptures provide guidance, particularly in Colossians 1:9–14.
Filled with Knowledge and Wisdom
Paul, in his letter to the Colossians, expresses his prayer for them to be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. This prayer encompasses the first step towards walking worthily. We must seek to grow in our knowledge of God and His Word, equipping ourselves with spiritual wisdom and understanding.
By immersing ourselves in the Scriptures, meditating on God's truth, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we gain the necessary knowledge and wisdom to live in a manner worthy of the King.
Four Tests for Living Worthy
In the following verses, Paul outlines four tests that help us assess the worthiness of our lives:
- The Fruit of Good Works (Colossians 1:10)
- Increasing in the Knowledge of God (Colossians 1:10)
- Being Strengthened with God's Power (Colossians 1:11)
- Giving Thanks to the Father (Colossians 1:12)
Fruit of Good Works
Good works are evidence of a transformed life in Christ. As we walk with Him, His love and grace flow through us, producing fruit that brings glory to God. This fruit includes acts of kindness, love, forgiveness, and service to others.
When we examine our lives, are we seeing the fruit of good works? Are we actively engaged in living out our faith, demonstrating Christ's love to those around us?
Increasing in Knowledge of God
Our knowledge of God should be continually growing and deepening. We are called to study His Word, to know Him intimately, and to understand His character and purposes. As we increase in knowledge, our relationship with God flourishes, and we gain a greater understanding of His will for our lives.
Are we actively pursuing a deeper knowledge of God? Do we spend time in prayer, seeking His guidance and studying His Word? Growing in our knowledge of God is essential to walking worthily.
Being Strengthened with God's Power
On our own, we are weak and prone to failure. But as believers, we have access to God's power through the Holy Spirit. This power enables us to overcome sin, resist temptation, and live victoriously for Christ.
Are we relying on our own strength, or are we surrendering to the power of God? Do we seek His strength and guidance daily, trusting in Him to equip us to walk worthily?
Giving Thanks to the Father
A heart of gratitude is a mark of a life worthy of the King. When we recognize and appreciate the grace and mercy God has shown us, our hearts overflow with thanksgiving. Gratitude not only honors God but also transforms our perspective and enables us to live with joy and contentment.
Are we cultivating an attitude of gratitude? Do we regularly express our thankfulness to God for His blessings and faithfulness in our lives?
Living a Worthy Life Today
As we reflect on these four tests, we must remember that living a worthy life is a journey. It requires daily surrender, dependence on God, and a commitment to growth and transformation. We will stumble and fall at times, but God's grace is always available to pick us up and set us back on the path of righteousness.
Ultimately, the worthiness of our lives is not determined by our own efforts or accomplishments. It is through faith in Jesus Christ that we are made worthy. His righteousness covers our sins, and His Spirit empowers us to live in a manner that pleases Him.
So, let us press on in our pursuit of a life worthy of the King. Let us seek to bear fruit, increase in knowledge, rely on God's power, and give thanks to the Father. And as we do so, may our lives be a testimony of His transforming grace and love.
