Freedom from the Fear of Death: How Christ's Sacrifice Sets Us Free

Children of God: Set Free from the Fear of Death

In the book of Hebrews, we are reminded of the incredible truth that as children of God, we share in flesh and blood. This means that we, as human beings, experience the same physical limitations and vulnerabilities. But what sets us apart is the fact that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, also partook in the same flesh and blood. He willingly clothed his deity with humanity and became fully man while remaining fully God.

Why did Jesus take on human form? The answer lies in his purpose: to die. As the preincarnate God, he could not die for sinners. But by uniting himself with flesh and blood, he became mortal and capable of experiencing death. Through his death, he aimed to destroy the one who has the power of death, which is the devil.

By dying on the cross, Christ accomplished a remarkable victory. He rendered the devil powerless by covering all our sins with his blood. Satan's ultimate weapon against us is our own sin. But if the death of Jesus takes away our sin, then the devil has no legitimate grounds to accuse us before God. As Romans 8:33 assures us, "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies." And on what grounds does God justify us? Through the blood of Jesus shed on the cross (Hebrews 9:14; Romans 5:9).

The devil's power lies in our fear of death. He uses this fear to keep us in lifelong slavery. But through the death of Jesus, we are delivered from this fear. God has justified us, and there is only future grace awaiting us. Satan cannot overturn God's decree of justification. And God, in his infinite wisdom, wants this assurance of our ultimate safety to have an immediate effect on our lives. He wants the happy ending, the victory over death, to take away the slavery and fear that we experience in the present.

As children of God, we are no longer bound by the fear of death. Instead, we can live with a loving abandon that is marked by trust and confidence in our Savior. This freedom allows us to let go of worldly possessions and even our mortal lives if necessary, knowing that our true treasure and hope lie in eternity with God.

So, how can we live in this freedom from the fear of death? The key lies in understanding and embracing the truth of our justification through the death of Jesus. When we grasp the magnitude of what Christ has accomplished for us, fear loses its grip on our hearts. We can confidently face the unknown, knowing that our eternal destiny is secure in the hands of a loving and victorious Savior.

Just as Jesus willingly took on flesh and blood to save us, we are called to follow his example. We are called to put our faith in him and surrender our lives to his lordship. This means letting go of our own desires and agendas and trusting in his perfect plan for our lives, even in the face of death. It means living each day with a sense of purpose and urgency, knowing that our time on earth is limited but that our impact for the kingdom of God can be eternal.

As we navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life, we can find comfort and strength in the promises of God's word. The Bible is filled with references to the hope and victory we have in Christ. In 1 Corinthians 15:54-57, Paul writes, "When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' 'O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?' The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

This passage reminds us that death has been conquered through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Death no longer has the final say in our lives; instead, we have the hope of eternal life in the presence of God. This truth should fill us with joy and confidence, enabling us to live with a boldness that transcends our circumstances.

In conclusion, as children of God, we have been set free from the fear of death through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The devil has been rendered powerless, and we can now live with a loving abandon that is marked by trust and confidence in our Savior. Let us embrace this freedom and live each day with a sense of purpose and urgency, knowing that our eternal destiny is secure in the hands of a loving and victorious God. May the promises of God's word fill our hearts with hope and joy, enabling us to live with boldness and courage in the face of death.
