Did God Write the Story You Didn't Want?

Have you ever looked around at your life and assumed that nothing is ever going to get better? That the hard things will just get harder and the good things might disappear? That there’s no point in hoping anymore because it will only lead to disappointment?

I have.

Discovering God's Plan in Unexpected Circumstances

When my husband left our family nine years ago, my adolescent daughters and I were reeling. We never imagined we’d be a splintered family. All we knew were unbroken families, and suddenly we weren’t in that group anymore.

We struggled to find our identity together and establish our new normal. I didn’t like the way my life story was unfolding, and I mourned what I had lost. In my mind, intact families had kids who were drawn to God. They laughed together and talked around the dinner table. They whispered heartfelt prayers at night and respected their parents’ authority.

Our family didn’t do those things anymore. At one point, both of my daughters wanted nothing to do with God. God had seemingly abandoned us, and I was left questioning if He had any control over the story of our lives.

God's Sovereignty in Our Brokenness

But as I journeyed through my pain and sought answers, God gently reminded me of His sovereignty. He assured me that He was still writing our story, even in the midst of brokenness.

One verse that brought me comfort during this time was Romans 8:28, which says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." This verse reminded me that even though our circumstances were not what we desired, God was still at work, weaving together all things for our ultimate good.

Trusting God's Promises

Trusting in God's promises can be challenging when we are facing difficult circumstances. It requires us to surrender our desires and trust that God's plan is greater than our own. But when we choose to trust, we open ourselves up to experiencing the peace and joy that only God can provide.

In Proverbs 3:5-6, we are encouraged to "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." This verse reminds us that God's ways are higher than our ways, and when we trust in Him, He will guide us on the right path.

God's Faithfulness in the Midst of Doubt

During my season of doubt, I found comfort in the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. Joseph's life took unexpected turns, including being sold into slavery by his own brothers and being falsely accused and thrown into prison. But through it all, God was with Joseph and ultimately used his story to save many lives.

This story reminded me that even when our circumstances seem hopeless, God is still present and working behind the scenes. He has a plan for our lives, even if it doesn't align with our own desires.

Hope in the Unseen

When we find ourselves in the midst of a story we never wanted, it can be easy to lose hope. We may question if God is even listening or if He cares about our pain. But the truth is, God is always present, even in the most difficult times.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us, "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." This verse reminds us that our hope is not based on what we can see in our circumstances, but on our faith in God's character and His promises. Even when we can't see the outcome, we can trust that God is working all things together for our good.

Finding Purpose in the Unexpected

As I reflect on my own journey, I can now see how God used the unexpected circumstances in my life to shape me and my daughters into who we are today. Our story may not be what we wanted, but it is a story of God's faithfulness, redemption, and grace.

God can take the broken pieces of our lives and mold them into something beautiful. Just as a potter takes clay and forms it into a masterpiece, God can take our brokenness and create something far greater than we could ever imagine.

Embracing God's Story for Your Life

So, if you find yourself in a story you never wanted, take heart. God is still at work, writing your story. He has a purpose and a plan, even in the midst of pain and brokenness.

Embrace God's story for your life, trusting that He knows what is best. Surrender your desires and seek His will. Allow Him to guide you and shape you into the person He created you to be.

Remember, our stories are not just about us. They are ultimately about God's glory and His work in the world. As we trust in Him and allow Him to write our stories, we become a testament to His faithfulness and grace.

God's Invitation to Trust

God is inviting you to trust Him with your story, even if it's not what you wanted. He is inviting you to surrender your desires and embrace His plan. Will you accept His invitation?
