The Must-Read Book for 2023: Discover the Power and Transformation of God's Word
The One Must-Read This Year
I have never called any book a must-read except one, the Bible. I suppose that’s because I take the word must so seriously. I mean must, or you perish — must, in order to make it to heaven.
Now there you go, turning salvation by grace into salvation by works. Salvation by Bible reading!
Perhaps you might respond like that, dismissing the idea of salvation by works. But let's dig deeper into the Bible and see what it truly says about the importance of reading and abiding in God's word.
The Power of God's Word
The Bible makes it plain that there is a practical, ongoing "holiness without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). This holiness is not something we can achieve on our own; it is produced by the Holy Spirit through the word of God. As Jesus prayed for us, "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth" (John 17:17).
When we abide in God's word, we experience the transformative power of His truth. It is through reading and meditating on His word that we are able to align our lives with His will, grow in faith, and become more like Jesus.
Confirmation of Discipleship
Jesus Himself said, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples" (John 8:31). Reading the Bible is not just a religious obligation; it is a way to confirm our identity as followers of Christ. It is through our ongoing engagement with His word that we demonstrate our commitment to Him and allow His teachings to shape our lives.
Consider the analogy of a student in a classroom. To truly be a student, one must attend classes, listen to the teacher, and study the material. Similarly, as disciples of Jesus, we must abide in His word, listening to His teachings, and studying the Scriptures. This active participation in His word is what distinguishes us as His true followers.
The Peril of Neglect
While the Bible emphasizes the importance of reading and abiding in God's word, it also warns about the consequences of neglecting it. Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, wrote, "I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:21).
Reading the Bible is not a mere option for believers; it is a matter of eternal significance. The Scriptures provide us with the guidance, wisdom, and revelation we need to navigate life and grow in our relationship with God. Neglecting the word of God not only hinders our spiritual growth but also puts our eternal destiny at risk.
The Relevance for Today
As we enter the year 2023 and look towards the future, the need for God's word remains as relevant as ever. In a world filled with uncertainty, confusion, and moral relativism, the Bible offers us a firm foundation and unchanging truth.
The Scriptures provide answers to the pressing questions of our time, addressing topics such as identity, purpose, relationships, and social justice. They offer hope, comfort, and guidance in times of trouble and serve as a compass to navigate the complexities of life.
Furthermore, the Bible reveals God's character and His redemptive plan for humanity. It points us to Jesus, the Savior of the world, who offers forgiveness, restoration, and eternal life. In a world desperately in need of hope and salvation, the Bible holds the key.
The Invitation
So, as we embark on this new year, I invite you to make the Bible your "must-read" for 2023 and beyond. Let us approach it with a hunger and thirst for righteousness, eager to encounter God's truth and experience His transforming power.
Make it a habit to set aside time each day to read and meditate on the Scriptures. Allow God's word to penetrate your heart, renew your mind, and guide your steps. Seek to understand His will and follow His teachings, trusting that He will lead you on the path of righteousness.
As you engage with the Bible, invite the Holy Spirit to illuminate its truths and empower you to live them out. Let the word of God be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path, guiding you in every decision and circumstance.
Remember, reading the Bible is not merely an intellectual exercise or a religious duty. It is a transformative journey that leads to eternal life. It is an invitation to know God intimately, to walk in His ways, and to experience the abundant life He has promised.
So, will you accept the invitation? Will you make the Bible your "must-read" this year and beyond? The choice is yours, and the impact it will have on your life is immeasurable.
