Experience the Power of the Holy Spirit: How to be Filled and Empowered
Lord, Fill Me with Your Spirit
As believers in Christ, we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit. However, it is possible to have the Holy Spirit without being filled with the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 5:18 to be filled with the Spirit. But what does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? And how can we experience this filling?
What is the Filling of the Holy Spirit?
The filling of the Holy Spirit is an ongoing process of submitting to the control of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is not a one-time event, but a continual surrender of our wills to the will of God. When we are filled with the Spirit, we are empowered to live a life pleasing to God. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to resist sin, to love God and others, and to serve God effectively.
Jesus promised his disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit to empower them to be his witnesses (Acts 1:8). On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, filling them with power to boldly proclaim the gospel (Acts 2:1-4). This filling of the Holy Spirit continued in the early church as believers were filled with the Spirit for various purposes (Acts 4:8, 31; 6:3, 5; 7:55; 9:17; 13:9).
Why Do We Need to be Filled with the Holy Spirit?
As Christians, we cannot live the Christian life in our own strength. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to live a life that is pleasing to God. The filling of the Holy Spirit enables us to resist sin and to live a life that is characterized by the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). It also enables us to serve God effectively and to be his witnesses in the world.
Without the filling of the Holy Spirit, we are powerless to resist sin. We may try to live a good life, but we will always fall short. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome the power of sin in our lives.
How Can We Experience the Filling of the Holy Spirit?
There are several things we can do to experience the filling of the Holy Spirit:
1. Confess Our Sin
Confession of sin is essential for experiencing the filling of the Holy Spirit. Sin grieves the Holy Spirit and hinders his work in our lives. When we confess our sin and ask for forgiveness, the Holy Spirit cleanses us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
2. Surrender to God
We must surrender our wills to the will of God. We cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit if we are not willing to submit to his control in our lives. Surrender means giving up our own desires and ambitions and seeking to do God's will above all else.
3. Seek the Holy Spirit
We must seek the Holy Spirit and ask him to fill us. Jesus promised that if we ask, we will receive (Matthew 7:7-11). We must ask in faith, believing that God will answer our prayer (James 1:6).
4. Abide in Christ
To be filled with the Holy Spirit, we must abide in Christ. Jesus said, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). We must stay connected to Christ, through prayer, reading the Bible, and fellowship with other believers.
5. Obey God's Word
We must obey God's Word if we want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my commands" (John 14:15). Obedience is evidence of our love for God, and it opens the door for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives.
Conclusion
The filling of the Holy Spirit is essential for living the Christian life. It enables us to resist sin, to love God and others, and to serve God effectively. We can experience the filling of the Holy Spirit by confessing our sin, surrendering to God, seeking the Holy Spirit, abiding in Christ, and obeying God's Word. Let us pray that God would fill us with his Spirit, so that we can live a life that is pleasing to him.
