Embracing Discipleship: Discovering Identity, Deepening Relationships, and Transforming Lives

What Does it Mean to be a Disciple?

When Jesus speaks, we listen. His words carry the weight of ultimate authority, as all power in heaven and earth has been given to him (Matthew 28:18). Picture this: Jesus, the Lamb who was slain, is worthy of receiving power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing (Revelation 5:12). Every knee will bow before him, and every tribe on earth will wail at his coming (Philippians 2:10; Revelation 1:7). The fury of God's wrath will be executed through him (Revelation 19:15).

Given the supremacy of Jesus, it is crucial that we pay attention to what he says. As his disciples, we have been united to him by faith and made alive in him by grace (Romans 6:5; Ephesians 2:4–5). Our righteousness is found in him and his work on our behalf (Galatians 2:16). We know his voice because he is our shepherd (John 10:27).

Understanding Discipleship

But what does it truly mean to be a disciple? To answer this question, let's delve into the essence of discipleship and its implications for our lives.

1. A Disciple's Identity

Being a disciple means embracing a new identity. We are no longer defined by our past mistakes or our worldly achievements. Instead, we find our identity in Christ. In him, we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). Our old self has died, and we are now alive in Christ (Romans 6:11). We have been adopted into God's family and are now co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). This identity transformation shapes every aspect of our lives.

2. A Disciple's Relationship

Discipleship involves a deep and intimate relationship with Jesus. We are not merely followers of a set of religious rules; we are followers of a person. Jesus invites us to abide in him, just as a branch abides in the vine (John 15:4). This relationship is marked by love, obedience, and a desire to know Jesus more deeply. We spend time in prayer and study of God's Word, seeking to align our hearts and minds with his.

3. A Disciple's Transformation

Being a disciple means allowing Jesus to transform us from the inside out. We surrender our will and submit to his authority. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are sanctified and conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). Our lives are marked by the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). We no longer conform to the patterns of this world, but are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).

4. A Disciple's Mission

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to participate in his mission. Jesus commands us to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that he has commanded (Matthew 28:19–20). We are ambassadors for Christ, proclaiming the good news of salvation to a broken and lost world (2 Corinthians 5:20). Our mission is to love God and love our neighbors, serving and seeking the well-being of others.

Living as Disciples in 2023 and Beyond

Discipleship is not a one-time event; it is a lifelong journey. As we navigate the complexities of the year 2023 and beyond, it is important to remember that the essence of discipleship remains unchanged. The truths of Scripture and the call to follow Jesus endure throughout time.

In a world that is constantly changing, discipleship offers an unchanging foundation. The words of Jesus provide guidance, wisdom, and comfort in every season of life. As we face new challenges, we can turn to the Bible for timeless truths that are relevant to our present circumstances.

Moreover, discipleship is not an individual pursuit. We are part of a global community of believers, connected by our faith in Jesus. Together, we can encourage, support, and sharpen one another as we walk this journey of discipleship. Whether through in-person gatherings or digital platforms, we can find ways to foster community and discipleship relationships.

Let us embrace the call to be disciples of Jesus with renewed fervor in the year 2023 and beyond. May we constantly seek to know him more deeply, to be transformed by his grace, and to participate in his mission of making disciples. In doing so, we will experience the abundant life that Jesus promised (John 10:10) and be a light in the darkness of this world.

So, are you ready to take up the call to discipleship? Will you follow Jesus with your whole heart, embracing your new identity in him? Will you allow him to transform every aspect of your life and join him in his mission? The choice is yours, and the rewards are eternal.
