Can Anyone Really Be Blameless? Hope and Holiness in Christ.
Can Anyone Really Be Blameless?
Have you ever read the Psalms and felt a twinge of guilt when the psalmist claims blamelessness, uprightness, integrity, and righteousness? It's easy to feel like we fall short of these lofty standards. But can anyone really be blameless?
The Search for Perfection
We all have a tendency to seek perfection. We want to be the best at everything we do, and we want to be seen as perfect by others. But the Bible tells us that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). We cannot achieve perfection on our own.
Even the Apostle Paul, who was known for his dedication to following God's law, acknowledged that he fell short of perfection. He wrote, "I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate...For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out" (Romans 7:15, 18).
So if even the great Apostle Paul struggled with living a blameless life, is it possible for anyone to achieve it?
Our Hope for Blamelessness
While we cannot achieve blamelessness on our own, we have hope through Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that "he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). Our hope for blamelessness is not based on our own efforts, but on the work that Jesus has already done for us on the cross.
When we put our faith in Jesus, we are justified before God. This means that God sees us as blameless, not because of our own righteousness, but because of the righteousness of Jesus that is imputed to us. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21).
This doesn't mean that we will never sin again. As long as we are in this fallen world, we will continue to struggle with sin. But we have the assurance that our sins have been forgiven and that we are seen as blameless in God's sight.
Living a Blameless Life
So if we are already seen as blameless in God's sight, does that mean we can just go on sinning? Absolutely not! The Bible tells us that we are called to live holy lives. As the Apostle Peter wrote, "As he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:15-16).
Living a blameless life doesn't mean that we will never sin again. But it does mean that we are committed to following Jesus and allowing him to transform us from the inside out. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
So while we cannot achieve perfection on our own, we have hope through Jesus Christ. We are already seen as blameless in God's sight, and we are called to live holy lives as we allow Jesus to transform us.
Conclusion
Can anyone really be blameless? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, we are already seen as blameless in God's sight through the work of Jesus Christ. But no, we cannot achieve perfection on our own. We will continue to struggle with sin as long as we are in this fallen world.
Our hope for blamelessness is not based on our own efforts, but on the work that Jesus has already done for us on the cross. As we follow Jesus and allow him to transform us, we can live holy lives and become more like him.
So let us not be discouraged when we fall short of perfection. Let us instead put our hope in Jesus and trust in his work on our behalf. And let us strive to live blameless lives as we follow him.
