Why Did Jesus Weep?

Have you ever wondered why Jesus wept? In the Bible, the shortest verse is John 11:35, which simply states, "Jesus wept." At first glance, it may seem like a simple expression of sorrow. However, this verse holds deeper meaning and sheds light on the character of Jesus.

1. Jesus' Compassion for Suffering

When we examine the context of Jesus' tears, we find that he wept after speaking with Lazarus's grieving sisters, Martha and Mary, and seeing all the mourners (John 11:33). It is important to note that Jesus had come to Bethany with the intention of raising Lazarus from the dead. He knew that joy would soon replace sorrow, and yet, he was "greatly troubled" and wept (John 11:33).

This raises the question: why would Jesus, who had the power to bring Lazarus back to life, weep in the face of impending victory over death? The answer lies in Jesus' deep compassion for those who were suffering. Despite knowing the outcome, Jesus allowed himself to fully enter into the sorrow of the moment. His tears were not just a display of empathy; they were a tangible expression of his heartache for the brokenness and pain caused by death.

As we reflect on Jesus' compassion, we can find comfort in knowing that we serve a God who understands our suffering. In times of grief and loss, we can turn to Jesus, who wept with us and for us.

Biblical References:

  • John 11:33-35 - "When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, 'Where have you laid him?' They said to him, 'Lord, come and see.' Jesus wept."

  • Hebrews 4:15 - "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

  • Psalm 34:18 - "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit."

2. Jesus' Invitation to Lament

Another reason why Jesus wept is to invite us into the practice of lament. Lament is a raw and honest expression of grief, sorrow, and even anger before God. It is a way for us to bring our pain and struggles to Him, knowing that He hears and cares.

Jesus, by example, shows us that it is okay to mourn and express our emotions openly. In a world that often encourages us to put on a brave face and suppress our pain, Jesus invites us to come to Him with our tears and burdens. He invites us to be vulnerable before the One who understands our deepest sorrows.

Through His tears, Jesus teaches us that we do not have to hide our pain or pretend everything is okay. Instead, we can bring our brokenness to Him and find comfort in His presence.

Biblical References:

  • Psalm 13:1-2 - "How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?"

  • Lamentations 2:11 - "My eyes are spent with weeping; my stomach churns; my bile is poured out to the ground because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because infants and babies faint in the streets of the city."

  • Psalm 62:8 - "Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us."

3. Jesus' Victory Over Death

While Jesus wept for the sorrow caused by death, His tears were not the end of the story. Jesus' ultimate purpose in coming to earth was to conquer sin and death through His own sacrificial death and resurrection.

When Jesus stood before the tomb of Lazarus, He demonstrated His power over death by calling Lazarus back to life (John 11:43-44). This miraculous act foreshadowed His own resurrection and the hope of eternal life that He offers to all who believe in Him.

Jesus' tears serve as a reminder that although we may experience pain and loss in this world, death does not have the final say. Through His victory over death, Jesus offers us the assurance of eternal life in His presence.

Biblical References:

  • John 11:43-44 - "When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out.' The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.'

  • 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 - "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

  • John 14:19 - "Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live."

4. The Future Hope in Jesus

As we consider Jesus' tears and His victory over death, we can find hope for the future. In a world filled with pain, suffering, and uncertainty, Jesus offers us a secure and eternal hope.

By placing our faith in Jesus, we can have confidence that He is with us in our present struggles and that He has prepared a future where there will be no more tears or sorrow (Revelation 21:3-4). Our hope is not based on wishful thinking or empty promises; it is rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

As we navigate the challenges of this year and beyond, let us cling to the hope that Jesus offers. Let us trust in His steadfast love and find comfort in His presence. And let us remember that just as Jesus wept, He also triumphed over death, offering us the hope of eternal life in Him.

Biblical References:

  • Revelation 21:3-4 - "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.'

  • Psalm 31:24 - "Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!"

  • Hebrews 10:23 - "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful."

Conclusion

Jesus' tears in John 11:35 reveal His compassion for those who are suffering, His invitation to lament, His victory over death, and the future hope He offers to all who believe in Him. As we journey through this year and beyond, let us remember that Jesus understands our pain, invites us to bring our burdens to Him, and offers us the assurance of eternal life. May we find comfort and hope in His presence, knowing that He weeps with us and triumphs over every sorrow.
