Why Christians Should Prioritize Physical Exercise: Glorifying God, Improving Health, and Setting an

Physical Exercise: What I Do and Why - Part 2

Physical exercise is an essential aspect of our well-being, and as Christians, it is imperative that we prioritize taking care of our bodies, which are the temple of the Holy Spirit. In Part 1 of this series, I shared what I do for exercise, and in this article, I will be sharing why I do it.

1. Glorifying God with Our Bodies

The Bible teaches that our bodies are not our own, but rather, they belong to God. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul says, "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

God created us in his image, and our bodies are a reflection of that image. Therefore, it is essential that we take care of our bodies and keep them healthy. This includes exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough rest.

When we take care of our bodies, we are glorifying God because we are taking care of something that belongs to him. Our bodies are a gift from God, and we should treat them with respect and honor.

2. Improving Our Mental and Emotional Health

Physical exercise not only benefits our physical health but also our mental and emotional health. Studies have shown that regular exercise can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Endorphins interact with the receptors in our brain that reduce our perception of pain and trigger a positive feeling in the body.

Additionally, exercise can help improve our self-esteem and confidence. When we set fitness goals and work towards achieving them, we feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in ourselves. These positive feelings can help us feel more confident in other areas of our lives as well.

3. Setting an Example for Others

As Christians, we are called to be salt and light in the world. This means that we should be setting an example for others to follow.

When we prioritize our physical health and make exercise a part of our daily routine, we are setting an example for others to follow. We can encourage our friends and family to take care of their bodies and prioritize their health as well.

Additionally, we can use our physical fitness as an opportunity to share the gospel with others. We can invite friends to exercise with us and use that time to talk about our faith and share the love of Christ with them.

4. Stewarding Our Bodies

As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of everything that God has given us, including our bodies. In 1 Peter 4:10, Peter says, "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace."

One way that we can be good stewards of our bodies is by taking care of them through physical exercise. When we exercise, we are keeping our bodies healthy and strong, which allows us to better serve others.

Additionally, when we take care of our bodies, we are better able to fulfill the callings that God has placed on our lives. Whether it be serving in ministry, caring for our families, or pursuing our careers, our physical health plays a significant role in our ability to fulfill these callings.

5. Honoring God with Our Time

Time is a precious commodity, and as Christians, we should be mindful of how we are using our time. In Ephesians 5:15-16, Paul says, "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."

Exercising regularly can help us make the best use of our time by improving our productivity and focus. Studies have shown that regular exercise can improve cognitive function, memory, and creativity.

Additionally, when we prioritize exercise and make it a part of our daily routine, we are honoring God with our time. We are using the time that God has given us to take care of our bodies and prioritize our health, which is a form of worship.

Conclusion

Physical exercise is an essential aspect of our well-being, and as Christians, it is imperative that we prioritize taking care of our bodies, which are the temple of the Holy Spirit. By glorifying God with our bodies, improving our mental and emotional health, setting an example for others, stewarding our bodies, and honoring God with our time, we can use physical exercise as a form of worship and service to God.

Let us commit to taking care of our bodies and making physical exercise a part of our daily routine, so that we can better serve God and others.
