When Will Jesus Return? Exploring the Timing and Urgency

How Soon Will Jesus Return?

How Soon Will Jesus Return?

Have you ever wondered when Jesus will return? Will it be in our lifetime or in the distant future? These questions have intrigued believers for centuries. In this article, we will explore this topic and seek understanding from the Bible.

When Did the "Last Days" Begin?

The concept of the "last days" is mentioned in various passages of Scripture. One key verse is found in Hebrews 1:2, which states that these last days began with the first coming of Jesus. It signifies a period of time leading up to the end of the world as we know it.

The apostles, who were eyewitnesses of Jesus' ministry, believed that His return would be imminent. They lived with a sense of urgency, eagerly anticipating His second coming. Acts 1:10–11 and Revelation 22:20 testify to their expectation.

Living with Urgency

The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, emphasizes the importance of living with urgency. In 1 Corinthians 7:29, he states, "This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short." He believed that the present form of the world was passing away.

Paul's words remind us that our time on earth is limited. The passing of nearly two thousand years since his writing may seem long to us, but in the grand scheme of eternity, it is relatively short. The urgency Paul felt is still relevant today as we continue to await Jesus' return.

Understanding God's Timing

While we may desire to know the exact timing of Jesus' return, Scripture assures us that only the Father knows. In Mark 13:32, Jesus Himself declares, "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

Instead of focusing on predicting the exact date, we are called to live each day in anticipation and readiness. As believers, we are encouraged to be watchful and faithful, using the time given to us to fulfill God's purposes.

Living in the Present

Although we eagerly await Jesus' return, it is essential to remember that our purpose is not merely to speculate about the future. God has called us to live in the present and make a difference in the world around us.

Jesus Himself taught us to pray, "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). This prayer reminds us that we have a role to play in advancing God's kingdom here and now. We are called to love our neighbors, share the Gospel, and live out our faith in practical ways.

Remaining Faithful

As time passes, it can be easy to grow complacent or discouraged in our waiting. However, the Bible encourages us to remain faithful and steadfast. Hebrews 10:36 reminds us, "For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised."

Let us not lose heart but continue to press on, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). Our faithfulness in the present prepares us for the future and ensures that we will be ready when Jesus returns.

Conclusion

As we navigate the year 2023 and beyond, let us hold onto the hope of Jesus' return. While we do not know the exact timing, we can live with urgency, faithfully carrying out God's purposes in our lives and in the world. Let us remain watchful, steadfast, and ready for the day when our Savior will come again.
