Have you ever felt comfortable in church? I’m not talking about physical comfort, like a plush seat cushion or a warm sanctuary. I mean the kind of comfort that comes from being around people who think and act like you, who share your views and values.


It’s natural to want to be comfortable. But when it comes to our faith, comfort can be dangerous. We can become complacent, lukewarm, and indifferent to the things of God. That’s why we need to make Sunday mornings uncomfortable.



What Does It Mean to Make Sunday Mornings Uncomfortable?


Making Sunday mornings uncomfortable doesn’t mean we should make ourselves or others physically uncomfortable. It means we should challenge ourselves and others to grow in our faith, to confront sin and unbelief, and to pursue holiness and obedience to God.


As the writer of Hebrews says, “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV).

One way we can make Sunday mornings uncomfortable is by challenging ourselves to go deeper in our understanding of God and his Word. Instead of just going through the motions of singing, praying, and listening to the sermon, we should actively engage with what we’re doing and learning.

  • What changes do I need to make?


By seeking to understand and apply God’s Word, we will be challenged to grow in our faith and become more like Christ.



Confronting Sin and Unbelief


Another way we can make Sunday mornings uncomfortable is by confronting sin and unbelief in our own lives and in the lives of others. This can be difficult and even painful, but it’s necessary if we want to grow in our relationship with God.


Jesus himself said, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother” (Matthew 18:15, ESV). We should be willing to confront sin and unbelief in a loving and gracious way, seeking to restore our brothers and sisters in Christ.



Pursuing Holiness and Obedience


Finally, we can make Sunday mornings uncomfortable by pursuing holiness and obedience to God. This means not only avoiding sin, but actively seeking to do what is pleasing to God.


As Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15, ESV). We should strive to obey God’s Word, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to live in a way that honors God.
