Transforming Your Desires: Letting God Shape Your Heart
God Wants to Shape Your Desires
What do you want from life? This question might seem simple, but the answer could reveal the deepest desires of your heart. As humans, we often desire things that we believe will give us happiness, satisfaction, or success. We pursue these desires with great zeal, hoping that they will fulfill us.
But what if I told you that God wants to shape your desires? What if I said that He wants to transform your heart so that your desires align with His will? What if I told you that God wants to give you the desires of your heart, as long as you delight in Him?
God's Design for Our Desires
God created us with the capacity to desire. Our desires are not inherently evil; they are a reflection of the image of God in us. The problem is that our desires have been corrupted by sin. We often desire things that are contrary to God's will, or we desire good things in a way that becomes an idol.
God's desire for us is that we would delight in Him above all else. Psalm 37:4 says, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." This verse is often misunderstood to mean that if we seek God, He will give us whatever we want. But the true meaning is that when we delight in God, our desires will align with His will. We will begin to desire the things that God desires, and our hearts will be transformed.
God Shapes Our Desires Through His Word
If we want to align our desires with God's will, we must be in His Word. Hebrews 4:12 says, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." When we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit works in us to transform our desires.
The Bible is not just a book of rules and regulations; it is a love letter from God to His people. Through His Word, God reveals His character, His plan for salvation, and His desire for a relationship with us. As we read the Bible, we begin to understand God's heart, and our desires are shaped accordingly.
God Shapes Our Desires Through Prayer
Prayer is another way that God shapes our desires. When we pray, we are communicating with God, and He speaks to us through His Spirit. As we pray, God reveals His will to us, and our desires are transformed. Jesus taught us to pray, "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). When we pray for God's will to be done, our desires align with His will.
Prayer is also a way for us to express our desires to God. When we bring our desires before Him, He can shape them and refine them. Sometimes, God will change our desires completely, and other times, He will give us the desires of our heart. But in every case, our desires will be aligned with His will.
God Shapes Our Desires Through Community
God also shapes our desires through the community of believers. Proverbs 27:17 says, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." When we are in community with other believers, we are challenged and encouraged to pursue God's will. We can learn from others who have walked the path before us, and we can share our struggles and victories with one another.
Community also provides accountability. When we share our desires with others, they can help us discern whether those desires are aligned with God's will or not. They can also encourage us to pursue God's will, even when it is difficult.
Conclusion
God wants to shape your desires. He wants to transform your heart so that your desires align with His will. When we delight in Him, read His Word, pray, and engage in community, our desires will be transformed. We will begin to desire the things that God desires, and our hearts will be filled with joy and satisfaction.
So, what do you want from life? Are your desires aligned with God's will? If not, I encourage you to seek Him today. Delight in Him, read His Word, pray, and engage in community. Allow God to shape your desires, and you will experience the abundant life that He has promised.
