The Transgender Movement and Christianity: Understanding the Issues and Our Role
All of Us Sinners, None of Us Freaks
The transgender movement has gained momentum in recent years, with both major political parties in the United States pushing towards it. For Christians, this movement brings with it a number of truth-claims that we must investigate to understand its core convictions.
The New Ways of Defining Humanity
The transgender movement is redefining what it means to be human. In the bestselling autobiography of Charles Mock, now known as Janet Mock, titled Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love, and So Much More, we get a glimpse into the personal narrative of someone who has embraced transgender identity.
Mock's story is one of pain, struggle, and ultimately triumph as she navigated the challenges of growing up transgender in America. Her story is one of many that are being told as the transgender movement gains momentum.
But what are the core convictions driving this movement? What are the new ways of defining humanity that are emerging from it?
Gender Identity vs. Biological Sex
One of the key convictions of the transgender movement is the idea that gender identity is separate from biological sex. In other words, a person's gender identity is not determined by their anatomy or chromosomes, but by their own internal sense of who they are.
This idea is often expressed as "gender is a social construct." The argument goes that society has created certain expectations and norms around what it means to be male or female, and these expectations are arbitrary and not based on any objective reality.
Therefore, a person who identifies as transgender is simply expressing their true gender identity, rather than conforming to the societal norms associated with their biological sex.
But what does the Bible say about gender identity and biological sex?
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
This verse tells us that God created humans as male and female. The distinction between male and female is not a social construct, but an inherent part of God's design for humanity.
Deuteronomy 22:5
A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.
This verse speaks directly to the idea of gender identity being separate from biological sex. It tells us that there are certain clothing and behaviors that are appropriate for men and women, and that violating these distinctions is an abomination to God.
While there are certainly cultural norms around what is considered "masculine" or "feminine," the Bible affirms the reality of biological sex and its importance in understanding God's design for humanity.
The Ethics of Gender Reassignment Surgery
Another key issue in the transgender movement is the ethics of gender reassignment surgery. For many transgender individuals, surgery is seen as a necessary step in aligning their body with their gender identity.
But what does the Bible have to say about this?
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
This verse tells us that our bodies are not our own, but belong to God. Therefore, we have a responsibility to care for our bodies in a way that honors God.
While there may be medical reasons for surgery, the decision to undergo gender reassignment surgery should not be made lightly. It is important to carefully consider the implications of such a decision and to seek wise counsel from trusted Christian leaders.
The Role of Christians in the Transgender Movement
As Christians, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
But what does this look like in practice? How can we love our transgender neighbors while still holding to our biblical convictions?
Speak the Truth in Love
Ephesians 4:15 tells us to speak the truth in love. As we engage with the transgender movement, it is important to speak the truth about God's design for humanity, while also expressing love and compassion for those who are struggling with gender identity.
It is not helpful or loving to simply condemn or dismiss transgender individuals. Rather, we should seek to understand their experiences and struggles, while also pointing them towards the truth of God's Word.
Stand Firm in Your Convictions
At the same time, we must also be willing to stand firm in our biblical convictions, even if they are unpopular or controversial. This means being willing to speak out against the harmful effects of the transgender movement, such as the normalization of gender dysphoria and the medicalization of gender identity.
It also means being willing to advocate for policies and practices that align with biblical values, such as protecting the rights of women and children in bathrooms and locker rooms.
Show Compassion and Hospitality
Finally, we must also show compassion and hospitality towards transgender individuals. This means welcoming them into our churches and communities, even if they do not conform to traditional gender norms.
We should seek to create a safe and welcoming environment where all people, regardless of their gender identity, can come and experience the love of Christ.
Conclusion
The transgender movement is redefining what it means to be human, with new ideas about gender identity and the ethics of gender reassignment surgery. As Christians, we must engage with these ideas and seek to understand their implications for our faith.
At the same time, we must also be willing to stand firm in our biblical convictions and advocate for policies and practices that align with God's Word. We must speak the truth in love, show compassion and hospitality, and ultimately point people towards the hope and redemption found in Jesus Christ.
Remember, we are all sinners in need of God's grace, and none of us are "freaks" in his eyes. Let us seek to love and serve one another, regardless of our differences, and always point towards the truth of God's Word.
