The Sovereignty of God: Even the Roll of the Dice
The Rolling Dice and God's Sovereignty
Have you ever played a game that involved rolling dice? Whether it's a board game or a game of chance, the outcome of the roll can often determine the course of the game. But have you ever stopped to think about who is ultimately in control of that roll of the dice?
In the book of Proverbs, we read, "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord" (Proverbs 16:33). In other words, even though it might seem like a random event, every roll of the dice is ultimately decided by God. He is the one who determines the outcome.
This idea can be hard to grasp at times. We might think that certain events are too small or insignificant for God to be concerned with. But the Bible tells us otherwise. Jesus himself said, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered" (Matthew 10:29-30).
Every small event, every tiny detail, is under God's control. There are no accidents or coincidences in God's economy. Even the smallest bird falling from a tree is within his sovereign plan.
In the book of Jonah, we see this truth played out in a dramatic way. God commands a fish to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17), a plant to provide shade for Jonah (Jonah 4:6), and a worm to kill the plant (Jonah 4:7). These seemingly insignificant events are all part of God's plan to bring Jonah to repentance and teach him a lesson about his sovereignty.
But it's not just the small events that are under God's control. The entire universe is subject to his command. Isaiah 40:26 tells us, "Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power, not one is missing." God is the one who created the stars and holds them in their place. He is the one who commands the sun, the mountains, the rivers, and the oceans. Nothing is outside of his control.
So what does this mean for us? It means that we can trust in God's sovereignty. We can have peace knowing that every event, big or small, is part of his wise and good purposes. We don't have to worry or be anxious about the future because we know that God is in control.
But this doesn't mean that we are mere puppets in God's hands. Scripture also tells us that we have a responsibility to make choices and take action. We are not passive participants in God's plan, but active participants. We make decisions and take steps, but ultimately it is God who is guiding and directing our path.
As we navigate through life, we can find comfort and assurance in knowing that every roll of the dice, every twist and turn, is ultimately decided by God. We can trust in his wisdom and his goodness, knowing that he is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
So the next time you roll the dice, take a moment to remember that God is the one who is ultimately in control. And as you go through life, remember that every event, big or small, is within his sovereign plan. Trust in his wisdom and his goodness, and rest in the knowledge that he is working all things together for your good.
