Who doesn't want to feel confident? To walk into a room with your head held high, feeling secure in your own skin and abilities. But true confidence, a deep sense of security and peace, is hard to come by in a world full of insecurity and fear.

Yet, as believers in Christ, we have access to a source of confidence that is unshakable. In Psalm 16, King David shows us the path to true confidence, from fear to security, instability to stability, and anxiety to joy.

The Starting Point: Fear

David begins the psalm with a cry for help: "Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge" (Psalm 16:1). He acknowledges his need for God's protection, recognizing that he cannot make it on his own. This is the starting point for true confidence: humility and dependence on God.

It's easy to put on a facade of confidence, to rely on our own strength and abilities to get us through life. David ends the psalm with a vision of the future: "You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:11). How to Cultivate True Confidence

The first step to true confidence is humility. We must acknowledge our need for God's help and provision, and recognize that we cannot make it on our own. As Jesus says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:3). When we recognize our spiritual poverty, we open ourselves up to God's riches.

2. Dependence

Once we've recognized our need for God's help, we must depend on him for everything. As the apostle Paul writes, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). When we depend on God for our every need, we can be confident that he will provide.

3. Worship

One of the best ways to cultivate true confidence is through worship. When we focus our attention on God's goodness and provision, we are reminded of his faithfulness and power. As the psalmist writes, "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness" (Psalm 29:2).

We were not meant to live the Christian life alone. We need the support and encouragement of other believers to cultivate true confidence. As the apostle Paul writes, "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing" (1 Thessalonians 5:11). When we surround ourselves with a community of believers, we can be confident that we are not alone.
