In this fast-paced world, where technology has made our lives more comfortable and convenient, it is easy to neglect our physical health. We spend hours sitting in front of screens, indulging in sedentary activities, and neglecting our bodies. However, as Christians, we are called to take care of our bodies, for they are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). In this article, I want to share with you why physical exercise has become an integral part of my life, what I do to stay active, and the biblical principles that guide me in this pursuit.



1. The Sovereignty of God and Our Responsibility



It is crucial to acknowledge that our days are numbered by God Himself. Our lifespan is not determined by our exercise routines or dietary choices. However, this does not give us an excuse to neglect our bodies. We are still responsible for taking care of the physical vessel that God has given us. Just as we are called to be good stewards of our finances and time, we are also called to be good stewards of our bodies.



Consider this: Some godly people who exercise regularly and eat well drop dead at every age. And some sedentary overeaters live to be ninety. Our days are set by God, not us. But keep in mind that some people have survived the plunge over Niagara Falls. That doesn't make it wise.



So, while we cannot control the length of our lives, we can control how we take care of our bodies and honor God with our choices.



2. The Benefits of Physical Exercise



Physical exercise offers numerous benefits that go beyond just physical well-being. It has a positive impact on our mental, emotional, and spiritual health as well. Here are some of the key benefits:



a. Physical Health:



Regular exercise reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. It improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, and boosts overall energy levels. Exercise also helps with weight management and promotes better sleep.



b. Mental and Emotional Health:



Exercise has been proven to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. It releases endorphins, which are natural mood-enhancers, and improves cognitive function. Physical activity also provides a healthy outlet for emotions and helps to clear the mind.



c. Spiritual Health:



Engaging in physical exercise can have a profound impact on our spiritual well-being. It teaches us discipline, perseverance, and self-control – qualities that are essential in our walk with God. It also reminds us of the importance of stewardship and the value of taking care of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit.



Furthermore, physical exercise can create opportunities for fellowship and community. Whether it's joining a sports team, participating in group fitness classes, or simply going for a walk with a friend, exercising together can strengthen relationships and provide a platform for sharing our faith.



3. My Journey with Physical Exercise



I want to share a personal anecdote to illustrate the impact of physical exercise on my own life. When I was younger, I led a fairly active lifestyle without the need for structured exercise. However, as I entered adulthood and my responsibilities increased, I found myself becoming more sedentary. This led to weight gain, decreased energy levels, and a general sense of dissatisfaction with my physical health.



Realizing the importance of taking care of my body, I decided to take up jogging. That was 43 years ago, and I have been a jogger ever since. Jogging has not only helped me maintain a healthy weight and improve my cardiovascular health but also provided a time of solitude and reflection. It has become a spiritual discipline for me, a time to connect with God and find clarity amidst the busyness of life.



4. Biblical Principles for Physical Exercise



The Bible provides us with principles that guide our approach to physical exercise. Here are a few passages that highlight the importance of taking care of our bodies:



a. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20:



"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."



This verse reminds us that our bodies are not our own; they belong to God. Therefore, we are called to honor Him by taking care of our physical health.



b. 1 Timothy 4:8:



"For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."



While bodily training has its benefits, it is important to recognize that godliness holds greater value. Physical exercise should not become an idol or the sole focus of our lives. It should be seen as a means to an end – a tool that helps us fulfill our purpose of glorifying God.



c. Proverbs 24:5:



"A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might."



This verse emphasizes the importance of wisdom and knowledge in our pursuit of physical health. It encourages us to seek understanding and make informed choices about our exercise routines and dietary habits.

By taking care of our bodies, we honor God and fulfill our responsibility as stewards of His creation.
