The Divine Calling of Motherhood: Embracing a High and Noble Purpose

Motherhood: A Divine Calling

Picture this: a few years ago, I found myself with four young children, the oldest being just three years old. I decided to take them all on a walk, loading up the stroller and sippy cups. As we were getting ready to go, my two-year-old turned to me and exclaimed, "Wow! You have your hands full!"

Instead of simply acknowledging the truth, she could have said something like, "Do you even know what causes that?" or "Are they all yours?" It seems that wherever we go, people feel the need to comment on our children. They question our decision to have them, suggest ways we could have prevented them, and even predict a bleak future when they become teenagers. And all of this while our children are listening.

Children: A Low Priority in Our Society

What many fail to realize is that our society, long before this generation of mothers was born, made a conscious decision about the importance of children. This decision was solidified when abortion was legalized, enshrining it in our laws. The message was clear: children are not a priority.

But as mothers, we know better. We understand that motherhood is not just a role we stumbled into or a job we ended up with. It is a divine calling, a high and noble calling from God Himself.

Motherhood as a Calling in the Bible

The Bible speaks directly to the calling of motherhood, revealing the honor and significance of this role. In Psalm 127:3, we read, "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward." This verse reminds us that children are not burdens, but gifts from God.

Proverbs 31:28 affirms the value of a mother's work, stating, "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her." This passage highlights the impact a mother has on her children and the gratitude they feel towards her.

Furthermore, in Titus 2:3-5, older women are instructed to teach younger women how to love their husbands and children, emphasizing the importance of motherhood in the community and the church.

Embracing the Divine Calling of Motherhood

So, how can we fully embrace the divine calling of motherhood in a society that often devalues it?

First, we must recognize that motherhood is not just a biological function. It is a spiritual calling that requires dedication, sacrifice, and love. We have the privilege of nurturing and shaping the next generation, influencing their lives in profound ways.

Second, we must remember that our calling as mothers extends beyond the physical and emotional aspects of raising children. We are called to teach them about God, His love, and His Word. We have the incredible opportunity to instill in them a foundation of faith that will guide them throughout their lives.

Finally, we must seek God's wisdom and strength to fulfill this calling. Motherhood can be challenging and overwhelming at times, but we can find comfort in knowing that God has equipped us for this task. In Isaiah 40:11, we are reminded that God "will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young." We can trust in His guidance and rely on His grace.

A Calling Worth Pursuing

Motherhood is not a rock-bottom job or a burden to be endured. It is a divine calling that carries eternal significance. As we raise our children, we have the opportunity to shape their character, nurture their souls, and lead them to a life in Christ.

So, the next time someone comments on the challenges of motherhood, let us respond with confidence and joy. Let us embrace our calling and recognize the privilege it is to be entrusted with these precious lives. And let us remember that in the midst of the daily chaos, we are participating in God's redemptive work, raising up a generation that will impact the world for His glory.
