Recreational Cannabis Use in the Church: A Biblical Perspective

Recreational Cannabis Use in the Church

As society continues to evolve and laws regarding marijuana change, the issue of recreational cannabis use has become a topic of discussion within the church. With the legalization of recreational marijuana in many places, including my own city, it is important for Christians to think critically and biblically about this matter.

In my younger days, I used to smoke marijuana every day. It was a significant part of my life when I was in my late teens. However, as I grew in my faith and understanding of Scripture, I began to question the morality of my recreational cannabis use.

Biblical Perspective on Recreational Cannabis Use

When considering recreational cannabis use, we must approach the topic from a biblical perspective. The Bible does not explicitly mention marijuana, as it was not known in biblical times. However, we can still find principles in Scripture that can guide our thinking.

1. Sobriety and Self-Control

The Bible consistently emphasizes the importance of sobriety and self-control. In Ephesians 5:18, Paul instructs believers, "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit." While this verse specifically addresses drunkenness, the underlying principle is clear: we are to exercise self-control and avoid any substance that impairs our judgment or hinders our ability to glorify God.

2. Submitting to Authority

As Christians, we are called to submit to the governing authorities (Romans 13:1). This includes obeying laws related to recreational drug use. While marijuana may be legal in some places, it is important to carefully consider the laws of our land and the potential negative consequences of our actions.

3. Stewardship of Our Bodies

The Bible teaches that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). As such, we are called to honor God with our bodies. This includes taking care of our physical and mental well-being. Using marijuana solely for recreational purposes, especially in excess, can have detrimental effects on our health and hinder our ability to serve God effectively.

Discerning the Context

While the Bible provides principles, it is important to discern the specific context in which recreational cannabis use occurs. The cultural and legal environment, as well as the individual's motives and intentions, must be taken into account.

Avoiding legalism, we should evaluate recreational cannabis use in light of the Christian's responsibility to love God and love others (Matthew 22:37-39). Will our cannabis use hinder our ability to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind? Will it impair our ability to love our neighbors and be a faithful witness for Christ?

Seeking Wisdom and Counsel

When facing complex moral decisions, it is wise to seek counsel from other believers and spiritual leaders. Engaging in open and honest conversations about recreational cannabis use within the church can help us gain different perspectives and insights.

Additionally, prayerful discernment and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit are crucial in making personal decisions regarding recreational cannabis use. God promises to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5), and seeking His guidance is essential in navigating this issue.

Conclusion

Recreational cannabis use is a complex issue that requires careful consideration and biblical discernment. While the Bible may not explicitly address marijuana, it provides principles that guide our thinking. Sobriety, self-control, submission to authority, and stewardship of our bodies are all important factors to consider.

As Christians, we are called to love God and love others above all else. We must evaluate our recreational cannabis use in light of this calling, considering its impact on our relationship with God and our ability to fulfill our mission as ambassadors for Christ.

Ultimately, the decision regarding recreational cannabis use is a personal one. It is important to seek wisdom, counsel, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in making these choices. Let us approach this issue with humility, grace, and a sincere desire to honor God in all that we do.
