Praising God in Suffering & Loss: Finding Strength, Joy, and Trust
When God Gives Praise in the Midst of Pain and Loss
Have you ever cried out to God in the midst of deep pain and loss, begging for healing, relief, or a change in your circumstances? Perhaps you have experienced the supernatural gift of praise that God loves to give in those moments.
In the book of Job, we read about a man who experienced immense suffering and loss. Job was a righteous man who feared God and turned away from evil. But Satan challenged Job's faith, claiming that he only served God because of the blessings he received. So, God allowed Satan to test Job's faith by taking away everything he had.
Job lost his wealth, his children, and his health. He was left with nothing but his faith in God. However, in the midst of his pain and suffering, Job did not curse God or turn away from him. Instead, he praised God, saying, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21).
Job's response to his suffering is a powerful example of how we can praise God even in the midst of our pain and loss. But how do we do this? How do we find the strength to praise God when everything in us wants to cry out in anger, despair, and frustration?
Understanding God's Sovereignty
One of the keys to praising God in the midst of suffering is understanding his sovereignty. God is in control of all things, and nothing happens apart from his will. This does not mean that he causes all things to happen, but it does mean that he allows them to happen for his purposes.
In the book of Isaiah, we read, "I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things" (Isaiah 45:7). God is the one who creates both good and bad, and he does so for his purposes.
This can be a difficult truth to accept, especially when we are in the midst of pain and suffering. But when we understand that God is in control, we can trust that he is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). We can trust that even in the midst of our trials, God has a plan and a purpose.
Finding Joy in the Midst of Suffering
Another key to praising God in the midst of suffering is finding joy in him. Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness is based on our circumstances, while joy is based on our relationship with God.
In the book of Philippians, Paul writes, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice" (Philippians 4:4). Paul wrote these words while he was in prison, facing the possibility of death. Yet he was able to rejoice because his joy was not based on his circumstances, but on his relationship with Christ.
When we find joy in the Lord, we can praise him even in the midst of our pain and suffering. We can trust that he is with us, that he loves us, and that he is working all things together for our good.
Trusting in God's Promises
Finally, praising God in the midst of suffering requires trusting in his promises. God has promised to never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), to give us strength when we are weak (Isaiah 40:29), and to work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
When we are in the midst of suffering, it can be easy to lose sight of these promises. But when we cling to them, when we trust in them, we can find the strength to praise God even in the darkest of times.
Conclusion
Praising God in the midst of suffering is not easy. It requires understanding God's sovereignty, finding joy in him, and trusting in his promises. But when we are able to do so, we can experience a supernatural gift of praise that can carry us through even the most difficult of times.
As you face trials and tribulations in your life, may you find the strength to praise God in the midst of them. May you trust in his sovereignty, find joy in him, and cling to his promises. And may you experience the supernatural gift of praise that only he can give.
