Passion in Prayer: Remembering God in the New Year

As we enter a new year, every Christian desires a deeper life of prayer. We long for a closer fellowship with God, a stronger connection to His heart. But how do we achieve this? How do we grow in our prayer life? Many would say that praying more consistently, interceding for others, and praying with more passion are the keys. While these are important aspects of prayer, there is another kind of passion that we often overlook – the passion to simply remember God.

Passionate praying is often associated with making audacious requests and asking God to do mighty works. We look out over our cities and ask God to move mountains, to bring about revival and transformation. We pray for the salvation of the lost, the end of injustice, and the growth of our churches. And these prayers are good and necessary. But there is a deeper level of passion that we can tap into – a passion that starts with a humble heart, a passion that desires to know God and have Him take the lead in our lives.

In Psalm 137, the psalmist expresses this passion when he says, "If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy!" (Psalm 137:5–6) The psalmist is not just talking about remembering a physical city, but about remembering the promises of God and His coming kingdom. He is praying to never forget God, to never lose faith.

The intensity of the psalmist's prayer is evident in the imagery he uses. He says that if he forgets God, he wants his right hand to forget its skill and his tongue to stick to the roof of his mouth. This is a vivid expression of his desperation to not lose God, to not turn away from Him. And we can relate to this desperation. We have all experienced darkness in our lives, and the only thing that makes it bearable is knowing that God is with us. The psalmist understands that the worst thing that can happen is not the suffering itself, but being separated from God in the midst of it. He prays with fierce passion, "God, don't let me forget you!"

This kind of passionate praying is not just a result of our love for God and our desire to be close to Him. It is also a reflection of our faith in God's faithfulness. The psalmist knows that God is faithful and mighty enough to not let him forget. He knows that God will keep His promises and will never leave or forsake His people. This kind of praying is an expression of our trust in God's sovereignty and His ability to keep us secure in Him.

When we pray for perseverance, we are not just hoping for the best or relying on our own efforts. We are praying with the assurance that God is faithful and will never let us forget Him. We can trust that He is watching over us and working all things together for our good. We can pray with confidence, knowing that He is able to keep us secure in Him.

In Romans 8:26–27, the apostle Paul tells us that when we pray, the Spirit prays for us according to the Father's will. Our prayers are not just empty words, but a powerful means of communication with God. Through prayer, we can align our hearts with His and partner with Him in His work. We can pray with passion and boldness, knowing that our prayers are heard and will be answered according to His perfect plan.

So, as we enter this new year, let us pray with passion. Let us pray for audacious things, for God to move mountains and bring about His kingdom on earth. But let us also pray with the passionate desire to never forget God, to never lose faith. Let us pray with the intensity of the psalmist, knowing that God is faithful and will keep us secure in Him. And let us trust that as we pray, God will work in and through us to accomplish His purposes.

In conclusion, passionate praying involves both bold requests for God to do mighty works and a passionate desire to never forget Him. We can pray with audacity, asking God to move mountains and bring about His kingdom. But we should also pray with the intensity of the psalmist, desperate to never lose God, to never turn away from Him. This kind of praying is not just a result of our love for God, but also a reflection of our faith in His faithfulness. We can trust that He will keep us secure in Him and work all things together for our good. So, as we enter this new year, let us pray with passion and trust that God will answer our prayers according to His perfect plan.
