Overcoming Fear: Trusting in God's Promises When We Feel He Has Failed Us
Will God Fail Me Now?
Fear is a natural human emotion that can be triggered by anything from the sight of a spider to the uncertainty of the future. As believers, we can experience fear of faithlessness, the fear that we will not hold fast to our faith and lose our eternal reward. But what about the fear that God will fail us?
It’s not uncommon to feel this fear when we face difficult circumstances that seem insurmountable. We may wonder if God has abandoned us or if He is incapable of helping us. But the truth is, God has promised to be with us always, even in the midst of our trials.
God’s Promises in Scripture
When we feel like God has failed us, it’s important to remind ourselves of His promises in Scripture. In Isaiah 41:10, God says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
This promise is echoed in Hebrews 13:5-6, where God says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’”
God’s promises are not empty words. He is faithful to fulfill them, even when we cannot see how. In Romans 8:28, we are reminded that “God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
God’s Character
When we feel like God has failed us, it’s also important to remember His character. God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19). He is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9) and just (1 John 1:9). He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Psalm 103:8).
God’s character is unchanging. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is not capricious or unpredictable. He is trustworthy and true.
Our Response to Fear
When we feel like God has failed us, our response should not be to give into fear, but to turn to Him in faith. In 2 Timothy 1:7, we are reminded that “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
We can choose to trust in God’s promises and character, even when our circumstances seem overwhelming. We can pray for His strength and guidance, and ask Him to help us see His hand at work in our lives.
As we turn to God in faith, we can also find comfort in the knowledge that we are not alone. We are part of a community of believers who can support and encourage us in our times of need.
Conclusion
When we face difficult times, it’s natural to feel fear and uncertainty. But we don’t have to let those feelings consume us. We can choose to trust in God’s promises and character, and turn to Him in faith.
As we do, we can find peace and comfort in the knowledge that God is with us always, and that He is faithful to fulfill His promises. We can also find strength in the support of our fellow believers, who can remind us of God’s goodness and love.
So let us not give in to fear, but let us turn to God and trust in His unfailing love.
