Navigating the Tension Between Godly and Ungodly Ambition
Ungodly Ambition
For the past twenty years, I have been deeply moved by the ministry of John Piper. His message of spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ has resonated with me on a profound level. The call to not waste our lives and to find our holy ambition has shaped my decisions and outlook on life and ministry.
However, upon reflection, I must admit that there have been instances where these exhortations have caused my soul to become distorted and twisted. The pressure they have created has led me down unfruitful paths, resulting in the wrong kind of earnestness, a wretched sense of urgency, and a fragile passion.
The Need for Biblical Urgency
While it is important to recognize the negative effects of ungodly ambition, it is equally crucial to acknowledge that the Bible does call for a certain level of urgency and pressure in our lives. The parable of the talents, for instance, warns us about the possibility of squandering the gifts and blessings God has bestowed upon us. Jesus himself cautioned against gaining the world at the expense of our souls.
So, how do we navigate this tension between godly ambition and ungodly ambition? How do we ensure that our pursuit of God's call on our lives remains pure and fruitful?
Biblical Guidance for Ambition
1. Seek God's Kingdom First
Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:33 to seek God's kingdom above all else. This means that our ambitions and desires should align with God's purposes and priorities. When our hearts are set on advancing God's kingdom, our ambitions become godly and fruitful.
2. Use our Gifts for God's Glory
God has given each of us unique gifts and talents for the purpose of building up his church and furthering his kingdom. In 1 Peter 4:10, we are encouraged to use these gifts to serve one another. When our ambitions are centered around using our gifts in a way that brings glory to God and benefits others, we can be assured that our pursuit is godly.
3. Trust in God's Sovereignty
Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that we can make our plans, but ultimately, it is God who determines our steps. Trusting in God's sovereignty allows us to pursue our ambitions with humility and reliance on his guidance. We can rest in the assurance that God is in control and will direct our paths.
Striving for Godly Ambition in 2023 and Beyond
As we enter the year 2023 and look towards the future, it is essential to approach our ambitions with a renewed focus on seeking God's kingdom, using our gifts for his glory, and trusting in his sovereignty.
In a world that often promotes self-centered ambition and the pursuit of worldly success, we must be intentional about aligning our ambitions with God's purposes. This requires a constant evaluation of our motives and a willingness to surrender our plans to God's leading.
Let us strive for godly ambition that is rooted in a deep love for God and a desire to see his name glorified. May our ambitions be driven by a genuine concern for the well-being of others and a passion to make a difference in the lives of those around us.
Remember, godly ambition is not about achieving personal recognition or accumulating wealth and power. It is about faithfully stewarding the gifts and opportunities God has given us for the sake of his kingdom.
So, as we embark on this new year and embrace the future, let us pursue our ambitions with a heart that is wholly surrendered to God. May our lives be marked by a deep sense of purpose and a relentless pursuit of God's will.
Let us be ambitious for God's glory alone.
