Longing for God: Finding Satisfaction in His Presence

As a deer longs for flowing streams, so does my soul yearn for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When will I be able to come and stand before God? (Psalm 42:1-2)

These words from Psalm 42 beautifully express the deep longing and thirst that the psalmist had for God. It's not a desperate cry for relief from difficult circumstances or a plea for the destruction of enemies. Instead, it's a heartfelt desire to be in the presence of God, to see His face, and to be satisfied in admiring and exulting in Him.

In the Psalms, we are invited to enter into the psalmist's thoughts and feelings towards God. And when we do, the main result is a growing love for God and a longing to see Him. It becomes the most important thing in our lives.

The psalmist asks, "When will I come and see the face of God?" This question finds its ultimate answer in the person of Jesus Christ. In John 14:9, Jesus declares, "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father." Jesus is the image of God, and when we see Him, we see the face of God.

Additionally, in 2 Corinthians 4:4 and 6, the apostle Paul speaks of the glory of God shining in the face of Jesus Christ. He refers to the gospel as the "light of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." When we hear and believe the gospel, we come to know the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

So, our longing to see the face of God is fulfilled in Jesus. Through His life, death, and resurrection, we have the opportunity to see and know God in a way that was not possible before. The gospel reveals to us the glory of God and invites us into a relationship with Him.

May this truth increase our hunger and thirst to see the face of God. And may we find our desire fulfilled in the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

In conclusion, the psalmist's longing for God in Psalm 42 teaches us the importance of desiring God above all else. It's not about seeking relief from our circumstances or the downfall of our enemies. It's about seeking God Himself, desiring to see His face, and finding satisfaction in Him. This longing finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is the image of God. Through the gospel, we can see and know the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. May this truth ignite a deep hunger and thirst within us to seek God and find our satisfaction in Him alone.
