Living a Life Worthy of Jesus: Reflecting His Character and Honoring His Sacrifice

Are You Worthy of Jesus?

As followers of Jesus Christ, we often hear about the worthiness of God and the worthiness of Christ. But have we stopped to consider our own worthiness as believers?

The concept of worthiness is one that is deeply ingrained in the Christian faith. In the Bible, we see that God calls us to live lives that are worthy of Him and of the calling we have received.

What Does It Mean to Be Worthy?

When we talk about worthiness, we are referring to the idea of deserving honor, respect, and admiration. To be worthy means to have qualities or characteristics that make one deserving of praise or recognition.

In the context of the Christian faith, being worthy means living a life that honors God and reflects the character of Christ. It means being obedient to His commands and living in a way that brings glory to Him.

Biblical References to Worthiness

The Bible is filled with references to worthiness and the call to live lives that are worthy of our calling as followers of Jesus Christ. Here are just a few examples:

Colossians 1:10

“So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

Ephesians 4:1-3

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Philippians 1:27-28

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.”

Revelation 3:4

“Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.”

These verses make it clear that as followers of Jesus, we are called to live lives that are worthy of our calling and of the gospel we have received. We are to bear fruit in every good work, be humble and gentle, patient and loving, and strive together for the faith of the gospel.

Are We Truly Worthy of Jesus?

As we consider these calls to live lives that are worthy of Jesus, it can be easy to become discouraged. After all, we know our own sinfulness and our propensity to fall short of God’s standards.

But it’s important to remember that our worthiness is not based on our own efforts or our own righteousness. Instead, our worthiness comes from our relationship with Jesus Christ.

When we put our faith in Jesus, we are made worthy by His sacrifice on the cross. Through His death and resurrection, He has made us righteous before God and has given us the ability to live lives that are pleasing to Him.

As Paul writes in Philippians 3:9, “and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”

Our worthiness, then, is not something we can earn or achieve on our own. It is a gift that is freely given to us through Jesus Christ.

Living Lives Worthy of Jesus

So, how do we live lives that are worthy of Jesus? As we’ve seen, it’s not about our own efforts or striving to be perfect. Instead, it’s about living in a way that reflects our faith in Him and our desire to honor Him.

Here are a few practical ways we can live lives that are worthy of Jesus:

1. Seek Him Daily in Prayer and Bible Study

One of the most important things we can do to live lives that are worthy of Jesus is to seek Him daily in prayer and Bible study. As we spend time with Him and learn more about His character and His ways, we will be better equipped to live in a way that pleases Him.

2. Love Others as He Has Loved Us

Jesus calls us to love others as He has loved us (John 13:34). This means putting the needs of others before our own, showing kindness and compassion, and forgiving others as we have been forgiven.

3. Serve Others with Humility

Jesus also calls us to serve others with humility, just as He served His disciples by washing their feet (John 13:1-17). When we serve others with humility, we reflect the character of Christ and show others what it means to live a life that is worthy of Him.

4. Stand Firm in Our Faith

Finally, we are called to stand firm in our faith, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. We are to be willing to suffer for the sake of the gospel and to remain steadfast in our commitment to follow Jesus, no matter the cost (1 Peter 4:12-19).

In Conclusion

As we’ve seen, being worthy of Jesus is not something we can achieve on our own. It is a gift that is freely given to us through our faith in Him. But that doesn’t mean we are off the hook when it comes to living lives that honor Him.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to live lives that are worthy of Him and of the gospel we have received. We are to love others, serve with humility, stand firm in our faith, and seek Him daily in prayer and Bible study.

May we all strive to live lives that are worthy of Jesus, not in our own strength, but in the power of His Spirit working in and through us.
