God's Promise: Jerusalem as a City Without Walls, a Wall of Fire
Jerusalem, the City of God, holds a special place in the hearts of believers. It is not just a physical city but a symbol of God's presence and protection for His people. In the book of Zechariah, we find a beautiful promise from the Lord regarding Jerusalem. He declares, "Jerusalem shall be inhabited as villages without walls because of the multitude of people and livestock in it. And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst" (Zechariah 2:4-5).
These words were spoken during a time when Jerusalem was in ruins and its people were in captivity. The walls that once surrounded the city for protection were destroyed, leaving them vulnerable to attacks from their enemies. But God, in His faithfulness and love for His people, promised to be their protection. Just as God promised to be a wall of fire around Jerusalem, He promises to be our refuge, our strength, and our fortress. Psalm 46:1 says, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." And in Isaiah 41:10, God assures us, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
These promises remind us that we are not alone in our struggles. God is always with us, surrounding us with His love and protection. He is our source of strength and our constant companion. When we face challenges, uncertainties, or threats, we can find peace and confidence in His presence.
