Four Kinds of Churches Worth Leaving
Churches are meant to be places of refuge and safety, where believers can gather to worship, learn and grow together in faith. However, not all churches are created equal, and there are some that may not be the best fit for you. In fact, there are four kinds of churches that are worth leaving.
1. Churches that Preach a Different Gospel
One of the most important aspects of a church is the message it preaches. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith and the central message of the Bible. Any church that preaches a different gospel should be avoided.
Galatians 1:8-9 warns us about those who preach a different gospel:
"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed."
There are churches that may preach a gospel that is different from what the Bible teaches. Some churches may add or subtract from the gospel message, or they may place an emphasis on good works rather than faith in Christ alone. These churches should be avoided because they can lead people astray from the truth of the gospel.
2. Churches that Tolerate Sin
Another reason to leave a church is if it tolerates sin. The Bible is clear that sin should not be tolerated in the church. In fact, Jesus himself gave us instructions on how to deal with sin in the church:
"If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector." (Matthew 18:15-17)
If a church tolerates sin, it is not upholding the standards of the Bible, and it may be leading its members astray. Sin should be dealt with in a loving and compassionate way, but it should never be ignored.
3. Churches that Refuse to Discipline Members
In addition to tolerating sin, some churches may also refuse to discipline their members. Church discipline is a biblical practice that is meant to help believers who are struggling with sin. It is also meant to protect the church from the influence of sin.
Matthew 18:17 says:
"If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector."
If a church refuses to discipline its members, it is not upholding the standards of the Bible. It may also be allowing sin to spread throughout the congregation.
4. Churches that are Not Committed to the Great Commission
The Great Commission is the command that Jesus gave to his followers to go and make disciples of all nations. It is a mission that every church should be committed to. Churches that are not committed to the Great Commission may be more focused on their own needs than on reaching the lost.
Matthew 28:19-20 says:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
If a church is not committed to the Great Commission, it may not be fulfilling its purpose as a church. It may also be missing out on opportunities to reach people with the gospel message.
Conclusion
Church is an important part of the Christian life, and it is important to find a church that is a good fit for you. However, there are some churches that are not worth staying in. If a church preaches a different gospel, tolerates sin, refuses to discipline its members, or is not committed to the Great Commission, it may be time to leave.
Remember, the church is not perfect because it is made up of imperfect people. But a healthy church will be committed to upholding the standards of the Bible and fulfilling its purpose to glorify God and reach the lost.
