Embracing the Victory: Resisting the Devil & Living in Christ's Triumph

Resisting the Devil: Embracing the Victory of Christ

In the midst of a world where the presence and activity of Satan seem all too real, the victory of Christ becomes even more precious to those who trust in Him. The New Testament teaches us that through His death and resurrection, Jesus decisively defeated Satan. Though Satan still has some limited freedom for a time, his power over God's people has been broken, and his ultimate destruction is assured.

The reason why Jesus came into the world was to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). By partaking in flesh and blood and experiencing death, Jesus effectively destroyed the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil (Hebrews 2:14). Through His triumph on the cross, God disarmed the rulers and authorities, putting them to open shame (Colossians 2:15).

In other words, the decisive blow against Satan was struck at Calvary. And while Satan still has a limited time of freedom, Revelation 20:10 tells us that he will ultimately be thrown into the lake of fire and tormented forever and ever.

What does this mean for those of us who follow Jesus Christ?

First and foremost, it means that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). The victory of Christ on the cross has secured our salvation, and no one can bring any charge against God's elect because it is God who justifies (Romans 8:33). Nothing in all creation, whether angels, rulers, present circumstances, future events, powers, height, depth, or anything else, can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).

Furthermore, we have the assurance that He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). The victory of Christ is not just a historical event, but a present reality in the lives of believers. As the saints, we have conquered Satan by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11).

Therefore, we are called to resist the devil, knowing that he will flee from us (James 4:7). The defeat of Satan is not just something to be celebrated, but something to be lived out in our daily lives. We are called to live in the victory that Christ has won for us and to make Satan know his defeat.

But how do we resist the devil? It starts with knowing and believing the truth of God's Word. Satan is the father of lies, and his primary weapon is deception. We must counter his lies with the truth of Scripture. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, He responded by quoting Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11). We too must arm ourselves with the truth of God's Word and use it as a weapon against the enemy.

In addition to knowing God's Word, we must also be filled with the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit empowers us to resist the devil and live in victory. Galatians 5:16 tells us to walk by the Spirit and we will not gratify the desires of the flesh. When we are filled with the Spirit, we are able to discern the lies of the enemy and walk in righteousness.

Furthermore, we must put on the armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6:10-18. This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Each piece of the armor represents a different aspect of our identity and the truth of God's Word. By putting on the armor, we are equipped to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

But resisting the devil is not just about defensive measures. It also involves actively pursuing righteousness and holiness. James 4:7 tells us to submit ourselves to God and resist the devil. When we submit to God and His will for our lives, we are actively resisting the devil's temptations and attacks.

In conclusion, the victory of Christ over Satan is a reality that we can embrace and live out in our daily lives. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has defeated the works of the devil and secured our salvation. As believers, we are called to resist the devil and live in the victory that Christ has won for us. This involves knowing and believing the truth of God's Word, being filled with the Holy Spirit, putting on the armor of God, and actively pursuing righteousness and holiness. May we stand firm in the victory of Christ and make Satan know his defeat.
