Embracing Feminine Excellence: Rejecting the Destructive Consequences of Feminism
The feminist movement has made significant strides in our country, but it has also had some unintended consequences. One of the most unfortunate outcomes is the destruction of the idea of achieving excellence as a woman. While feminists claim to be fighting for equality, their definition of equality often means sameness. As Christians, we believe that women are equal to men but also recognize that we are different and have different strengths and abilities. This belief in the inherent value and potential of women is not something we learned from feminists, but rather from the gospel.
In the Bible, the apostle Paul teaches us that in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female (Galatians 3:28). This verse emphasizes the equality of all believers, regardless of their gender. The idea that women are equal to men is not a feminist idea; it is a Christian idea that has been part of our faith for centuries. It is important to recognize this and not let feminists take credit for something that is the fruit of the gospel.
Unconverted societies historically have not treated women well. The respect and equality that women enjoy in many Christian societies is a direct result of the teachings of Jesus and the transformation of hearts and minds that comes from following Him. Women being treated with respect is a fruit that grows on one kind of tree, and that tree is a cross.
So, what is wrong with feminism? Much of it comes down to a fight over definitions. The feminist notion of equality often means sameness, while as Christians, we believe that equality does not require us to be the same as men. We can acknowledge and celebrate our differences without implying inequality. Just as a rolling pin and a measuring cup are different tools that serve different purposes in the kitchen, men and women have different strengths and abilities that can be celebrated and valued without diminishing one or the other.
Feminism often seeks to impose masculine standards for achievement on women, effectively erasing the potential for feminine excellence. A woman who achieves truly feminine excellence, according to the standards and virtues that are unique to women, is often deemed regressive or embarrassing by our society. The few women who manage to succeed in traditionally male-dominated fields are often patronizingly applauded for their achievement, as if they have overcome some insurmountable obstacle.
As Christians, we need to fight harder to recapture the idea of feminine excellence. We must reject the stereotypes that portray women as helpless and soft, and instead embrace the virtues and qualities that make us uniquely feminine. The Bible provides numerous examples of women who embody virtue, obedience, ambition, wisdom, courage, faithfulness, and strength. We can look to these examples and strive to emulate them in our own lives.
For instance, we can look to the story of Ruth, who demonstrated loyalty and faithfulness to her mother-in-law, even when it meant leaving her homeland and starting anew in a foreign land. We can learn from the wisdom and discernment of Abigail, who prevented a disaster by humbly and wisely approaching David and defusing a potentially violent situation. These women exemplified feminine excellence in their obedience to God and their willingness to use their unique strengths and abilities to serve others.
In Proverbs 31, we find a beautiful description of a woman who is praised for her industry, wisdom, and care for her family. She is described as a woman of noble character, who fears the Lord and excels in all that she does. This passage paints a picture of feminine excellence that is far removed from the feminist ideal of success defined by masculine standards. Instead, it celebrates the unique qualities and virtues that women possess and encourages us to pursue excellence within those parameters.
As women, we have the potential to achieve greatness and make a significant impact in the world, but we must redefine what success looks like and reject the notion that we must conform to masculine standards to be considered successful. True feminine excellence lies in embracing our unique strengths and abilities, using them to glorify God and serve others. We must not be swayed by the world's definition of success, but rather strive to live according to God's design for us as women.
In conclusion, the feminist movement has had some unintended consequences, including the destruction of the idea of achieving excellence as a woman. While feminists claim to be fighting for equality, their definition of equality often means sameness, erasing the potential for feminine excellence. As Christians, we believe that women are equal to men but also recognize that we are different and have different strengths and abilities. We must fight harder to recapture the idea of feminine excellence and reject societal expectations that diminish our unique qualities and virtues. By embracing our God-given design and pursuing excellence within those parameters, we can truly thrive as women and make a meaningful impact in the world.
