Drawing Near to God: A Journey of Joy and Fulfillment
Drawing Near to God: A Journey of Joy and Fulfillment
Have you ever felt a longing deep within your soul? A desire for something more, something greater than what this world has to offer? This longing is a universal human experience, and it is a sign that we were made for something beyond ourselves. We were made for God.
In the book of Hebrews, we are given a command: "Let us draw near with a true heart" (Hebrews 10:22). The writer of Hebrews wants us to understand the importance of drawing near to God, of having a close and intimate relationship with Him. This is not a physical act, but rather an act of the heart. It is an invisible journey that can be undertaken at any time and in any place.
But why should we draw near to God? What is the significance of this command? The answer lies in the heart of the gospel, in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. God has done extraordinary and costly things to draw us near to Himself. He sent His Son to suffer and die so that through Him, we might have access to God. The plan of redemption is all about bringing us into close fellowship with our Creator.
And this fellowship is for our joy and God's glory. God does not need us to be happy or fulfilled. He is complete in Himself, within the fellowship of the Trinity. Yet, in His mercy and love, He offers us the opportunity to experience the fullness of joy and eternal pleasures in His presence (Psalm 16:11). Drawing near to God is not a burdensome duty, but a pathway to true and lasting fulfillment.
Imagine a beautiful garden, filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. This garden represents our souls, and God desires to walk with us in this garden, to enjoy its beauty and to cultivate it. But sin has created a barrier between us and God. It has turned this once glorious garden into a wasteland. However, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, this barrier has been removed. The way to the garden is now open, and God invites us to draw near.
Drawing near to God is not about our own efforts or achievements. It is not about building a tower of Babel to reach heaven. It is about recognizing our need for God and accepting His invitation to come close. It is about acknowledging our sinfulness and receiving the forgiveness and grace that God offers through Christ. It is about surrendering our lives to God and allowing Him to transform us from within.
In the book of James, we are told to "draw near to God, and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8). This is a promise from God Himself. When we take the step to draw near to Him, He meets us with open arms. He desires a relationship with us, and He longs to reveal Himself to us in deeper and more intimate ways.
But how do we draw near to God? It starts with a true heart, with an authentic desire to know and love Him. It requires humility, as we acknowledge our need for Him and recognize that we cannot save ourselves. It involves daily seeking God through prayer, reading His Word, and meditating on His truths. It means surrendering our will to His and allowing Him to guide and direct our lives.
Drawing near to God also involves community. In the book of Hebrews, we are encouraged to "consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together" (Hebrews 10:24-25). We need the support and encouragement of fellow believers as we journey towards God. We need accountability and fellowship to help us stay on the path and to grow in our relationship with Him.
As we draw near to God, we will experience His presence in our lives. We will find joy and peace that transcends our circumstances. We will discover a love that is unfailing and a hope that is unshakable. Drawing near to God is not a one-time event, but a lifelong journey. It is a journey that leads to a deeper understanding of who God is and a greater realization of our purpose in Him.
So, let us heed the command to draw near to God. Let us embark on this journey of joy and fulfillment. Let us seek Him with all our hearts and allow Him to transform us from the inside out. And as we draw near to God, may we find that He is drawing near to us, ready to shower us with His love, grace, and mercy. May we experience the fullness of joy and the pleasures forevermore that can only be found in His presence.
