Choosing Life: A Letter to a Woman Considering Abortion
To a Woman Considering Abortion
Dear Sister,
I know that facing an unplanned pregnancy can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. It can be tempting to seek a quick solution that seems to offer a way out. But as a follower of Jesus Christ, I want to urge you to consider the weight and significance of the decision you are about to make.
Abortion is a topic that has become increasingly divisive in our society. Some argue that it is a woman’s right to choose what she does with her own body. Others claim that it is the taking of a human life and should be prohibited at all costs. As Christians, we are called to look to the Scriptures for guidance on such matters.
Created in God’s Image
The Bible teaches us that every single human being is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). This means that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14) and that our worth and value come from being made in the likeness of our Creator.
While we may be tempted to think of an unborn baby as a mere clump of cells or a problem to be solved, the reality is that even at the earliest stages of development, that baby is a unique and valuable human being. Scripture tells us that God knows us even before we are formed in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5) and that he has a plan and a purpose for our lives (Psalm 139:16).
It is important to remember that the decision to have an abortion is not just about the mother’s body, but also about the life of the child growing inside of her. As followers of Christ, we are called to value and protect all human life, from conception to natural death.
The Sanctity of Life
Abortion is the taking of a human life, plain and simple. The Bible is clear that murder is a sin (Exodus 20:13) and that we are not to take vengeance into our own hands (Romans 12:19). The life growing inside a mother’s womb deserves the same protection and care as any other human being.
There are no circumstances under which it is acceptable to take the life of an innocent person. Even in cases of rape or incest, the unborn child is not to blame for the sins of another. We must remember that God is sovereign and can bring beauty and redemption out of even the most difficult and painful situations.
It is also important to consider the long-term emotional, spiritual, and physical effects of abortion. Many women who have had abortions report experiencing feelings of guilt, shame, and regret. Others struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The physical risks associated with abortion are also significant and can include infection, hemorrhaging, and damage to reproductive organs.
Hope and Healing
It is my prayer that you will choose life for your unborn child. But regardless of the decision you make, please know that there is hope and healing available to you. God is a loving and compassionate Father who desires to bring wholeness and restoration to every area of our lives.
If you have had an abortion in the past, please know that there is forgiveness and healing available to you as well. The Bible tells us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). There are also many resources available, both within the church and in the community, to help women who have experienced the pain of abortion.
Conclusion
As you consider your options in the face of an unplanned pregnancy, I urge you to seek the wisdom and guidance of God. He is the author of life and the giver of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17). He knows you intimately and cares deeply for you and your child.
Remember that you are not alone in this. There are many people who would be willing to walk alongside you, to offer support, encouragement, and practical help. Above all, know that you are loved and valued by the God who created you and has a plan and a purpose for your life.
May the peace of Christ be with you always,
Your Sister in Christ
